Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Nears Completion with April Inauguration Planned
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has indicated that four critical packages of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, stretching from the Eastern Peripheral Expressway (EPE) near Khekra to the Saharanpur bypass, are now fully prepared for public use. According to officials, the corridor is likely to be inaugurated in the first week of April, marking a significant milestone in India's infrastructure development.
Inauguration Details and Preparations
An NHAI official involved with the project revealed that the Uttarakhand chief secretary recently conducted a thorough review of the expressway. The inaugural ceremony is scheduled to take place at the Forest Research Institute in Dehradun, with preparations already in full swing. This event will officially open the corridor, which has been under construction as part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana since its approval in 2020.
Enhanced Travel Efficiency and Distance Reduction
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, a blend of brownfield and greenfield projects, is set to revolutionize travel between the national capital and Uttarakhand. It will reduce the distance from 235 kilometers to 212 kilometers, allowing commuters to cover the journey in just over two hours, a dramatic improvement from the current four to five hours. The route originates in Akshardham, Delhi, and traverses through key locations in Uttar Pradesh, including Baghpat, Baraut, Muzaffarnagar, Shamli, and Saharanpur.
Speed Limits and Toll Structure
On this access-controlled expressway, the maximum permissible speed will be 100 kilometers per hour for cars and 80 kilometers per hour for trucks. There are four toll plazas along the corridor, with a cost-effective option for regular travelers. A person driving a car with a FASTag annual pass can complete the trip for Rs 60, while those without the pass will pay approximately Rs 500.
Current Status and Trial Runs
Although not officially inaugurated, two packages from Akshardham to the UP border near Loni and from UP Gate in Loni, Ghaziabad, to Khekra near EPE have been open for trial runs since January this year. Vehicles are already plying on these stretches, enabling commuters from Akshardham to reach the Saharanpur bypass in about one hour. The official inauguration date will be announced by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways after consultations with the Prime Minister's Office.
Project Components and Environmental Considerations
The expressway is being developed in six packages in Uttar Pradesh and two in Uttarakhand, with a total estimated cost of Rs 11,970 crore. Key segments include a 14.8-kilometer stretch from Akshardham to the UP border and a 16.8-kilometer section from UP Gate to Khekra. The remaining four packages cover various villages, totaling significant distances. In Uttarakhand, a 20-kilometer stretch passes through the eco-sensitive zone of Rajaji National Park, featuring Asia's longest elevated wildlife corridor at 12 kilometers, which includes a 340-meter Daat Kali tunnel on the outskirts of Dehradun. Only 4.6 kilometers of this stretch is brownfield, with the rest being greenfield. Construction delays occurred due to restrictions imposed by the National Board for Wildlife, limiting work between sunset and sunrise in the national park area.
Quality and Development Approach
A report from The Times of India in January highlighted that the new six-lane highway offers superior ride quality compared to the Delhi-Jaipur Expressway and the EPE. The NHAI prioritized laying the road ahead of the last monsoon season, allowing it to settle properly rather than rushing the inauguration, ensuring durability and safety for users.
