Major Fire Incident at Hazardous Cargo Warehouse in Navi Mumbai
A significant fire erupted on Saturday afternoon at the chemical warehouse of JWR Logistics Pvt Ltd, a company specializing in hazardous cargo, located near Padeghar in Panvel, Navi Mumbai. The blaze, accompanied by loud explosions, triggered widespread panic in the surrounding area and led to temporary traffic disruptions along the affected stretch.
Details of the Fire and Evacuation
The warehouse, part of a 97-acre facility situated along the NH-4B highway and approximately 11 kilometers from JNPT, includes a container freight station and a hazardous materials storage area. Fire officials reported that the container yard and warehouse were stocked with highly flammable substances, such as barrels containing tar and other chemicals, which fueled the rapid spread of the flames. The fire quickly engulfed containers parked on the premises, creating a dangerous situation.
Workers at the container yard were caught off guard by the sudden outbreak but managed to evacuate immediately, ensuring no casualties were reported. A fire official stated, "The container yard and warehouse on the premises were stocked with hazardous materials like barrels containing tar and highly inflammable chemicals, which acted as fodder for the fire to rage and spread to the premises, engulfing even the containers parked at the premises. The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. The workers at the container yard were caught unawares due to abrupt fire breakout and ran for their lives as the fire spread to the containers. No casualty was reported as the workers at the container yard immediately evacuated when the fire broke out."
Firefighting Efforts and Traffic Management
Vijay Rane, chief fire officer of Cidco, highlighted the challenges in extinguishing the blaze, noting that it took around five hours to douse the fire, followed by an ongoing cooling operation. He explained, "It took around five hours to douse the fire, followed by the cooling operation, which will be a time-consuming process, since the firefighters are continuously spraying water jets and foam to prevent the fire from reigniting as the details of the storage of materials at the premises are yet to be obtained from the concerned authorities of JWR Logistics Park."
To facilitate the firefighting operations, traffic authorities implemented safety measures. Atul Dahiphale, senior inspector of the Uran traffic unit, said, "The stretch of road leading to the container yard was cordoned off for 1 km distance and the vehicular movement was diverted while the firefighting operation was in progress." This ensured that emergency responders could work without hindrance and minimized risks to public safety.
Ongoing Investigations and Safety Concerns
The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, with authorities yet to determine what sparked the incident. The presence of hazardous materials at the site has raised concerns about storage protocols and safety measures, prompting calls for a thorough review of compliance with regulations. The incident underscores the risks associated with handling flammable chemicals in industrial settings and the importance of robust emergency preparedness.
As the cooling operation continues, firefighters remain on high alert to prevent any potential reignition. Updates on the investigation and any further developments are awaited from local authorities and JWR Logistics.
