FSSAI Directs States to Ramp Up Enforcement Against Banned Fruit Ripening Chemicals
In a decisive move to safeguard public health, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued stringent directives to state food safety commissioners across the country. The regulator has mandated a comprehensive crackdown on the illegal use of hazardous chemicals, such as calcium carbide, for artificially ripening fruits.
Nationwide Surveillance and Enforcement Drive Launched
The FSSAI's order emphasizes the urgent need for enhanced vigilance and rigorous enforcement actions at the state level. Authorities have been instructed to conduct frequent and surprise inspections at fruit markets, wholesale hubs, warehouses, and retail outlets. The primary objective is to identify and eliminate the distribution and application of prohibited ripening agents that pose severe health risks to consumers.
Calcium carbide, a commonly misused substance, is explicitly banned under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated regulations. When used on fruits, it releases acetylene gas, which can contain traces of arsenic and phosphorus. Consumption of fruits treated with this chemical has been linked to a range of serious health issues, including neurological disorders, skin irritations, and gastrointestinal problems.
Legal and Health Implications of Non-Compliance
The FSSAI has underscored that the use of calcium carbide and other unauthorized ripening agents constitutes a clear violation of food safety laws. Offenders found using these substances face severe penalties, including hefty fines and potential imprisonment. The regulator has advised state bodies to ensure strict adherence to approved methods, such as the use of ethylene gas in controlled concentrations, which is considered safe for commercial fruit ripening.
This enforcement initiative is part of a broader effort to align with national food safety standards and protect consumers from adulterated and hazardous food products. The FSSAI has also called for increased public awareness campaigns to educate both vendors and consumers about the dangers of chemically ripened fruits and the importance of opting for naturally matured produce.
Coordinated Action and Reporting Mechanisms
To ensure effective implementation, the FSSAI has directed state authorities to establish coordinated action plans involving local food safety officers, law enforcement agencies, and other relevant stakeholders. Regular monitoring and reporting of inspection outcomes and enforcement actions are required to maintain transparency and accountability in the crackdown.
The regulator's proactive stance aims to curb the rampant misuse of illegal ripening agents, which has been a persistent concern in various states. By strengthening surveillance and imposing stringent penalties, the FSSAI seeks to foster a safer food ecosystem and uphold the integrity of India's fruit supply chain.
