Fresh Gas Leak Incident at Tarapur MIDC Hospitalizes 17 Workers
A new gas leak at the Tarapur MIDC industrial area in Boisar, Palghar, has resulted in seventeen workers being affected, intensifying worries about safety standards in local industries. The incident involved a leak of dimethyl sulphide (DMS) gas, which occurred on Sunday afternoon at a pharmaceutical facility known as Arti Pharma Lab.
Details of the Incident and Medical Response
The affected workers were immediately rushed to a private hospital in Boisar for treatment, where they are currently under medical care. According to reports, the company allegedly failed to notify the police about the leak, with the incident only coming to light after the workers were admitted to the hospital. Authorities have launched an investigation to assess any safety lapses.
Health Impacts and Delayed Symptoms
Dimethyl sulphide exposure typically releases vapors that can cause eye irritation and sore throats, which were the primary complaints among the hospitalized workers. MIDC sources indicated that the symptoms appeared approximately four hours after the leak, with no immediate effects noted initially.
Ongoing Investigation and Regulatory Scrutiny
Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh confirmed that the Boisar police registered an offense around 1 pm on Monday and are actively investigating the case. A senior police official stated, "We received information from the hospital on Monday morning and have since begun our investigation." Statements from all 17 workers have been recorded as part of the probe.
Broader Concerns Over Industrial Safety
This incident adds to a series of gas leaks in the Tarapur MIDC zone, prompting criticism from activists who question worker safety and regulatory oversight. The recurring nature of such events highlights potential gaps in enforcement and safety protocols within the industrial area.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are expected to review compliance with safety measures and determine accountability for the leak, aiming to prevent future occurrences and ensure better protection for industrial workers.
