Goa Government Abattoir Reports Dramatic 76% Surge in Buffalo Slaughter for Financial Year 2025-26

Official data presented in the Goa Legislative Assembly reveals a substantial increase in buffalo slaughter operations at the state-run Goa Meat Complex in Usgao. Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services Minister Nilkanth Harlankar disclosed these figures on Thursday, highlighting significant growth in both domestic consumption and export activities.

Sharp Rise in Slaughter Numbers Across Three Financial Years

The statistics show a remarkable upward trajectory in buffalo processing at the government facility. During the financial year 2025-26, which spanned from April 2025 to February 2026, the complex slaughtered a total of 13,617 buffaloes. This represents a dramatic 76% increase compared to the previous year's figure of 7,722 animals. The contrast becomes even more striking when examining the 2023-24 period, when only 554 buffaloes were processed, all within the first three months of that financial year.

Distribution Between Local Markets and Export Channels

Of the total animals slaughtered in 2025-26, approximately 8,022 buffaloes were supplied to municipal traders within Goa to meet local demand. Meanwhile, 5,595 animals were specifically processed for export purposes, indicating growing international market interest in Goan meat products.

This distribution pattern shows a shift from the previous year. In 2024-25, out of 7,722 slaughtered buffaloes, 6,455 went to local traders, 1,067 were sent outside Goa (primarily to Kerala), and 200 were exported directly.

Monthly Fluctuations Reveal Seasonal Patterns

The month-by-month breakdown for 2025-26 demonstrates considerable variation in slaughter activity:

  • October 2025 recorded the highest volume with 1,773 animals slaughtered
  • June 2025 followed closely with 1,691 animals
  • May 2025 saw 1,683 animals processed
  • August 2025 marked the lowest activity with only 41 animals slaughtered

Estimated Meat Production Reaches New Heights

Using standard industry calculations based on an assumed average live weight of 400kg per buffalo and dressed meat representing 33% of live weight, the 2025-26 operations produced substantial meat quantities:

  • 1,058.9 tonnes of meat for the local Goan market
  • 756.6 tonnes of meat for export markets
  • Total production exceeding 1,815.5 tonnes

For comparison, the 2024-25 period generated approximately 852.1 tonnes for local consumption, 140.8 tonnes for supply outside Goa, and 28 tonnes for export, totaling just over 1,020.9 tonnes.

Context and Implications for Goa's Meat Industry

The dramatic increase from 554 animals in 2023-24 to over 13,600 in 2025-26 suggests significant expansion in Goa's organized meat processing sector. The data indicates both growing domestic demand within Goa and increasing export opportunities for buffalo meat products. Minister Harlankar's presentation provides valuable insights into the operational scale and economic impact of the government-run abattoir, which serves as a key infrastructure component for the state's animal husbandry and meat processing industries.
