Gujarat PV Sales Defy Auto Slump, Jump 8.35% in 2025 with 29% December Surge
Gujarat Car Sales Grow 8.35% in 2025, Defy Industry Trend

In a year marked by challenges for the broader automotive sector, Gujarat's passenger vehicle (PV) market has emerged as a notable exception. Defying the prevailing stagnation, the state concluded the calendar year 2025 with robust growth, powered by a significant year-end sales explosion.

A Year of Resilience and a Strong Finish

According to the latest vehicle retail data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), Gujarat chapter, passenger vehicle sales in the state climbed by 8.35% in 2025. A total of 3,87,670 cars found buyers, up from 3,57,793 units sold in the previous year.

The real highlight, however, was the closing month. December 2025 witnessed a remarkable year-on-year jump of nearly 29% in PV retail volumes, with sales reaching 39,496 units. This powerful finish helped balance out the softer performance seen in earlier months, allowing the segment to end the year on a decisively positive note.

Pranav Shah, the FADA Gujarat state chairperson, emphasized the scale of this achievement. "The overall growth of 13% in December, with 29% growth in cars, is one of the highest seen in the month," he stated. Shah pointed to a confluence of factors driving this upswing, including pent-up demand following a reduction in Goods and Services Tax (GST), a beneficial monsoon that bolstered rural purchasing power, and consumers making advance purchases to beat routine price hikes announced by car manufacturers for January 1.

Key Drivers Behind Gujarat's Auto Momentum

Dealers across the state reported that the market began regaining consistent traction from September onwards. The growth was sustained by a mix of strategic and socio-economic factors:

  • Post-GST Cut Demand: The reduction in GST rates provided a direct boost to affordability, lifting demand for both passenger cars and two-wheelers.
  • Robust Rural & Semi-Urban Demand: Improved enquiries from these regions, fueled by the good monsoon and a continued post-Covid preference for personal mobility due to limited public transport, played a crucial role.
  • Festive Spillover and Year-End Offers: Attractive discounts and financing schemes carried over from the festive season into December, enticing buyers.
  • Replacement Purchases in Two-Wheelers: Officials noted a sharp rise in two-wheeler upgrades, with many owners choosing to buy new vehicles rather than renew registrations for models that had a year or two left.

A senior Regional Transport Office (RTO) official confirmed the ground-level trend, noting that overall vehicle sales were higher than the previous year. The official also highlighted a growing niche: "We are also seeing a stronger traction in the high-end EV car segment." However, the replacement purchase trend observed in two-wheelers was far less pronounced in the four-wheeler category.

Broader Market Performance in 2025

The FADA data for Gujarat reveals growth across most vehicle categories in 2025, contributing to a total retail growth of 10.1%. The commercial vehicle (CV) segment saw a strong 14.6% increase, while two-wheeler sales grew by 12.5%. The tractor segment was the only one to see a decline, falling by 14.6%.

This performance is particularly significant given the overarching pressure on discretionary spending, fluctuating urban demand, and generally cautious consumer sentiment that characterized much of the year. Gujarat's automotive market has demonstrated its resilience and capacity for recovery, setting a positive precedent as the industry moves into the new year.
