Gujarat Fuel Panic: Petrol Demand Jumps 2.5 Times on Monday

Fuel Panic Buying Grips Gujarat as Rumors Trigger Massive Demand Spike

Vadodara witnessed unprecedented scenes on Monday as panic buying led to a dramatic surge in fuel demand across Indian Oil Corporation Ltd (IOCL) stations throughout Gujarat. According to official data, the state experienced a fuel consumption frenzy that pushed petrol sales to extraordinary levels.

Unprecedented Sales Figures Reveal Extent of Panic

Sanjib Kumar Behera, Executive Director and State Head of IOCL's Gujarat marketing division, revealed startling statistics. "Our average daily petrol sale in Gujarat stands at 3,000 kilolitres per day. However, on Monday alone, our fuel stations across the state sold 7,917 kilolitres of petrol," Behera stated, highlighting how demand suddenly skyrocketed due to circulating rumors about potential fuel shortages.

The diesel sales told a similar story of heightened consumption. While Gujarat typically consumes 6,400 kilolitres of diesel daily, Monday's figures surged to 11,550 kilolitres. Behera, who also serves as the state-level coordinator for the oil industry in Gujarat, emphasized that "we managed to meet the entire demand for both petrol and diesel as we have enough inventory."

Official Reassurance Amidst Public Anxiety

In response to the developing situation, IOCL took proactive measures to calm public fears. "No one was turned away from our fuel stations. People need not panic as there is no shortage of fuel," Behera assured, addressing the core concern driving the buying frenzy.

The corporation operates 2,285 fuel pumps across Gujarat, all of which functioned normally despite the increased traffic. IOCL officials were deployed to multiple stations to directly engage with consumers, urging them not to believe unfounded rumors and confirming adequate fuel stocks.

Market Stabilization Expected Shortly

Looking ahead, Behera expressed confidence in a swift return to normalcy. "We expect the situation to normalize within a day or two," he projected, suggesting the panic buying episode would be temporary. As Gujarat's largest supplier of petrol and diesel, IOCL also provides fuel to other petroleum firms, reinforcing its critical role in the state's energy infrastructure.

This incident underscores how quickly market psychology can transform routine fuel purchasing into a crisis scenario, even when supply chains remain robust and inventories are sufficient to meet extraordinary demand.
