Gurgaon Home Chefs Grapple with LPG Shortage Crisis

In the kitchen of her Sushant Lok-1 residence, 38-year-old Loveleena Goel meticulously plans every meal based on the dwindling gas levels in her cylinder. As a home chef who has operated a small catering service for neighborhood families and gatherings over the past five years, she represents a growing number of small food entrepreneurs in Gurgaon struggling to maintain their kitchens amidst a severe LPG supply disruption.

Operational Hardships and Order Reductions

The ongoing crisis has compelled Goel to significantly reduce the number of orders she accepts. "I booked LPG cylinders a few days ago, but delivery is still pending. Currently, I am relying on a backup cylinder, but once it empties, I am uncertain how to proceed. There is no clarity on when the next refill will arrive," she explained. This uncertainty led her to recently decline a party order for 25 people, limiting her services to a few loyal, long-time customers. "I have cut down orders by almost half to ensure enough gas remains for my household needs as well," she added.

Other home chefs echo similar anxieties, highlighting the difficulties in daily planning. Maneka Anand, 48, who runs a home-based kitchen service in Ardee City for eight years, stated that irregular supply makes accepting new orders challenging. "My kitchen operations depend entirely on LPG. Without timely cylinder deliveries, meal planning becomes extremely tough. I have stopped taking new orders except for emergencies. Normally, a cylinder lasts 15–20 days, but now everything hinges on unpredictable refill schedules," she said.

Exploring Alternative Cooking Methods

With gas cylinders becoming increasingly scarce, some entrepreneurs are experimenting with alternative cooking techniques to keep their kitchens functional. Vandana Marwah, operating a home-based kitchen in Sushant Lok-2, shared her experience: "I tried switching to induction, microwave, and air frying to cope, but traditional gas cooking is irreplaceable. I won't shut down my kitchen because many rely on me for daily meals. Even if I have to purchase cylinders at higher prices, I will manage to keep running," she asserted.

This LPG shortage has created widespread anxiety among small operators, disrupting their business models and forcing adaptive strategies. The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by micro-entrepreneurs in urban areas, where essential resource shortages can threaten livelihoods and community services.
