GMDA Launches Major Road Revamp Project in Gurgaon Ahead of Metro Expansion
In a significant move to enhance urban infrastructure, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced a comprehensive revamp of the master and service roads in sectors 3 and 5 of Gurgaon. This project, estimated at Rs 4.9 crore, will cover a 900-metre stretch between Old Railway Road and Sheetla Mata Road, aiming to address long-standing civic issues and prepare for upcoming metro construction.
Project Details and Scope
The initiative focuses on strengthening the main carriageway and adjoining service roads, with additional improvements to drainage systems, footpaths, and road safety infrastructure. The stretch from Old Railway Road near Prakash Puri Chowk to Bhagat Singh Chowk, where it connects with Sheetla Mata Road, was identified for overhaul after persistent demands from local residents for redevelopment.
A senior GMDA official confirmed that tenders for the work have been invited, and the project is expected to be completed within a year once the agency is finalized. The redevelopment is strategically designed to streamline traffic movement in the area, as officials noted that underutilized or poorly developed service roads have increased traffic load on the main carriageway.
Addressing Waterlogging and Enhancing Safety
A key component of the project is tackling persistent waterlogging, a major concern for residents. GMDA plans to upgrade the drainage system along the service road and regrade the green belt by lowering its level to improve water retention during rainfall. To prevent encroachments such as unauthorized parking and roadside vending, the green belt will also be fenced.
Furthermore, the project includes the development and repair of footpaths to facilitate better pedestrian movement, along with the installation of road safety furniture like signage, markings, and studs. Landscaping and enhancement of the green belt are also part of the plan to improve the overall aesthetic and functional condition of the stretch.
Link to Future Metro Construction
The timing of this revamp is closely linked to future metro construction along the corridor. As part of Phase 2, the metro corridor from Millennium City Centre to Cyber City will pass through this stretch. Officials emphasized that improving service roads will be crucial for managing traffic diversions during the metro construction phase, ensuring minimal disruption to daily commutes.
Resident Reactions and Expectations
Local residents have welcomed the decision, urging GMDA to complete the project before the upcoming monsoon season. Dinesh Vashisht, a resident of Sector 5, highlighted the severe waterlogging issues, particularly around Bhagat Singh Chowk and near Vardhman Hospital. He stated that during heavy rainfall, water accumulates across the entire stretch, making movement difficult for both pedestrians and vehicles. Residents hope that proper repairs and maintenance of the road and drainage system will provide much-needed relief.
This project underscores GMDA's commitment to addressing civic infrastructure gaps and enhancing the quality of life in Gurgaon, setting a precedent for future urban development initiatives in the region.
