Guwahati Residents Struggle with LPG Cylinder Shortages Amid Official Denials
In Guwahati, Assam, a growing crisis is unfolding as numerous households find themselves unable to secure timely refills of domestic LPG cylinders, despite repeated assurances from marketing companies that production remains normal and consumers should not worry. This contradiction between official statements and ground reality has left many residents frustrated and anxious about their daily cooking needs.
Distributors Point to West Asia Conflict as Root Cause
Distributors in the city have reported receiving significantly fewer 14.2 kg cylinders than required for daily distribution over the past several days. They attribute this shortfall directly to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which has disrupted supply chains and logistics. Anil Boro, an employee at a distributor for Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), explained the situation in detail.
"We are facing a severe shortage in the supply of domestic LPG cylinders," Boro stated. "The supply of commercial cylinders has already been completely halted. As a result, we are now issuing domestic LPG refills to consumers only five days after they make a booking." He further emphasized that distributors are operating under strict instructions from marketing companies and have no autonomy to make independent decisions regarding distribution.
Consumer Frustration Mounts at Distribution Points
The impact of this supply disruption is vividly visible at distribution centers across Guwahati. At the Pinakshi Gas Service in Chandmari, consumers were seen gathering hours before the distributor opened its doors at 10 am, hoping to secure refills. However, tensions flared when distributor employees informed them that no supply was available, leading to heated arguments.
One affected consumer, A Thapa, shared his experience: "I booked a refill on March 7 but was not issued one on March 10 as promised. The distributor told me I would have to wait five days after booking. Now, after waiting five days, they say they haven't received any supply on Thursday. The government claims there is no shortage of cooking gas. If that's true, why are distributors not issuing refills?"
New Rules and Recommendations from Distributors
In response to the constrained supply, distributors have implemented several measures to manage the situation. Consumers are now required to adhere to a mandatory 25-day gap between two bookings, a rule enforced to stretch available stocks. Additionally, Boro advised consumers to check with their distributors on a daily basis for updates on supply availability, as the situation remains fluid and unpredictable.
"We are distributing domestic LPG cylinders strictly according to the instructions we have received from the marketing companies," Boro reiterated. "We cannot take any decision on our own. Consumers need to understand that we are doing our best under these challenging circumstances."
