India to Launch Bidding for 220 MWe Small Modular Nuclear Reactor Within Six Months
India is poised to take a significant leap in expanding its nuclear energy capabilities with plans to invite bids for the establishment of a 220 MWe Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR-200) within the next three to six months. This initiative marks a crucial component of the nation's transition toward cleaner energy sources, as confirmed by officials speaking to financial publications.
Foreign Participation and Standardized Design
While foreign companies will be permitted to participate in the bidding process, they must do so exclusively through partnerships with local Indian firms. This strategic move ensures that international expertise is leveraged while fostering domestic industry growth. The reactor design will be standardized, with the inaugural unit serving as a prototype for future installations across the country.
Cost and Development Details
The pilot project has received approval for a cost of approximately Rs 30 crore per megawatt (MW), translating to a total estimated expenditure of around Rs 5,960 crore for development and construction. Funding will be sourced through the Nuclear Energy Mission. Following necessary approvals, construction is projected to span between 60 and 72 months.
The BSMR-200 is being collaboratively developed by the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL). Inter-ministerial consultations are currently in progress to finalize the bidding specifics, with the ultimate decision resting with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs.
Policy Context and Ambitious Goals
This development follows the enactment of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India (SHANTI) Act in December 2025, which opened the nuclear sector to private investment. Domestic companies capable of executing the project on an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) basis have already been identified.
India's Union Budget has allocated Rs 20,000 crore to develop at least five indigenously designed and operational small modular reactors by 2033 under the Nuclear Energy Mission. The country has set an ambitious target of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047, alongside efforts to bolster local manufacturing and technological advancements in the sector.
Recent Milestones
In a recent achievement for India's nuclear programme, the prototype fast breeder reactor attained criticality earlier this month, underscoring the nation's progress in nuclear technology. This milestone complements the broader strategy to enhance energy security and reduce carbon emissions through nuclear power.
