A devastating industrial accident claimed two lives at the Sarmanda stone quarry in Jamshedpur on Tuesday, when a truck loaded with boulders lost control and crushed both victims beneath its wheels.
The Fatal Incident Details
According to Manoj Kumar Murmu, the officer in-charge of Potka police station, the tragedy unfolded when the leaseholder of the stone mine, Shubojit Gope (30), and a laborer identified as Robin Sardar alias Tuklu (28) were loading large stones onto the vehicle. Without warning, the heavy truck began moving backward, possibly due to a catastrophic brake failure.
Desperate Escape Attempt Turns Deadly
In a desperate bid to save themselves from the out-of-control vehicle, both men jumped from the moving truck. Tragically, their escape attempt placed them directly in the path of the vehicle's wheels. The truck subsequently turned turtle, but both victims had already been fatally crushed. Police confirmed that both individuals died instantly on the spot from their severe injuries.
Ongoing Investigation and Safety Concerns
The Potka police have registered the case and are conducting a thorough investigation into the exact circumstances that led to the brake failure. This tragic incident has raised serious questions about safety protocols and vehicle maintenance standards at mining sites across the Kolhan region, which encompasses East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Seraikela-Kharsawan districts.
Local authorities are examining whether proper safety inspections were conducted on the mining equipment before operations began that day. The mining community in Jamshedpur has been left shaken by the sudden loss of two community members in this preventable tragedy.
