Jamshedpur Industries Rapidly Adopt Piped Natural Gas Amid Propane Crisis
The ongoing conflict in West Asia has triggered a significant shortage of propane gas supply, compelling numerous industries in Jamshedpur to swiftly transition to Piped Natural Gas (PNG) as an alternative fuel source. This strategic shift is essential to maintain uninterrupted operations across the city's industrial landscape.
Urgent Response to Fuel Shortages
Propane has traditionally served as the primary fuel for many plants in this industrial hub. Gauri Shankar Mishra, General Manager of GAIL Jamshedpur, highlighted the critical nature of the situation. In response to the propane deficit, the Gas Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) executed an emergency installation of a PNG facility at the Tata Motors plant in Jamshedpur. Remarkably, this project was completed in a record 24 hours on Wednesday evening, showcasing an unprecedented level of efficiency and urgency.
Mishra explained that Tata Motors faced severe operational challenges due to the propane shortage, prompting company officials to urgently request PNG connections. "Our team worked round the clock to lay the gas pipeline and initiate supply," he stated on Thursday. GAIL is now set to supply 25,000 standard cubic metres per day (SCMPD) of natural gas to Tata Motors, ensuring the automaker's production lines remain active.
Expanding PNG Supply Across Major Industries
Beyond Tata Motors, GAIL has secured agreements to extend PNG supply to other key industrial players in Jamshedpur. The company will provide 20,000 SCMPD to Tata Steel and 5,000 SCMPD to Timken India's Jamshedpur plant, which manufactures roller bearing units for Vande Bharat trains. Additionally, GAIL plans to supply 3,000 SCMPD to Tata Steel Downstream Products Ltd (TSDPL) at Bara, Agrico, and 500 SCMPD to Tata AutoComp Systems, a subsidiary of Tata Motors located within the Telco plant.
Mishra confirmed that pipeline installation work for these units is expected to be finalized within the next 7 to 10 days, ensuring a seamless transition to natural gas across the industrial sector.
Benefits and Future Projections
The shift to PNG offers dual advantages: it reduces carbon emissions and guarantees a reliable energy supply. Mishra emphasized that amid the propane shortage, more companies are opting for PNG connections. "In the coming weeks, several industries are expected to install natural gas connections," he noted. GAIL aims to supply one lakh SCMPD of natural gas to industrial units in Jamshedpur by mid-May, marking a significant step towards energy sustainability and operational resilience.
This rapid adaptation underscores the industrial sector's agility in responding to global supply chain disruptions, ensuring that Jamshedpur remains a robust manufacturing center despite external challenges.
