Major Industrial Fire Ravages Kanpur Tannery, Causing Crores in Damage
A significant fire incident occurred at the HS International Tannery located in Wajidpur, under the jurisdiction of the Jajmau police station in Kanpur, on Tuesday night. The blaze, which officials attributed to a short circuit, resulted in extensive damage to property and goods valued at crores of rupees. Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident.
Fire Erupts During Night Shift Operations
The tannery, owned by Naushad Ahmad, a resident of Emerald Gulistan, JK, was operational at the time of the fire. Employees were working on the ground floor of the three-storey facility when a sudden short circuit triggered the fire. The workers immediately raised an alarm and evacuated the premises to safety.
Upon receiving information, the tannery operator rushed to the site and promptly alerted the fire department. Firefighters and police personnel arrived swiftly and engaged in a challenging operation to control the flames.
Intense Firefighting Efforts Overcome Obstacles
Fire officer Rahul Nandan reported that approximately eight fire tenders were deployed from multiple stations, including Jajmau, Meerpur, Kidwai Nagar, Fazalganj, and Panki. The firefighting teams faced considerable difficulties due to narrow roads and the congested location of the industrial area, which hampered access for the vehicles.
The fire was ultimately brought under control after nearly four hours of relentless effort. Extra vigilance was maintained throughout the operation because of the industrial setting. Firefighters had to fetch water 23 times from a nearby tannery and Bima Hospital to sustain their efforts against the intense blaze.
Substantial Financial Losses Incurred
The fire caused devastating financial losses for the tannery owner. Naushad Ahmad revealed that he had recently established a shoe finishing unit worth over Rs 2 crore, which was completely reduced to ashes in the fire. Additional damages included:
- A shoe cutting unit valued at Rs 95 lakh installed on the ground floor
- Leather and other materials worth over Rs 10 lakh
- A soling, finishing, and packing setup worth approximately Rs 30 lakh on the first floor
- The lab and spray department located on the upper floor, which were also completely burned down
The total estimated loss runs into several crores of rupees, marking a severe blow to the industrial unit.
Post-Fire Investigations and Safety Scrutiny
In the aftermath of the fire, the fire department has directed a thorough inspection of the factory's safety standards. Officials have stated that if any negligence is found during the investigation, strict action will be taken against those responsible. This incident highlights ongoing concerns about fire safety protocols in industrial areas, particularly in densely populated regions with limited access.
The successful containment of the fire without any loss of life is being credited to the swift response of emergency services and the effective evacuation by employees. However, the substantial property damage underscores the need for enhanced preventive measures and infrastructure improvements in such industrial zones.
