Labour Unrest Escalates in Bulandshahr as Workers Demand Fair Wages
Labour unrest has intensified in the region, spreading to Bulandshahr on Monday, where over 100 workers staged a nearly four-hour protest outside TAG Tropical Agrosystems (India) in the Sikandrabad industrial area. The demonstration highlighted growing dissatisfaction among contract workers, who are calling for higher wages and essential benefits.
Key Demands and Allegations by Protesting Workers
The workers voiced serious grievances, alleging harassment by contractors and citing inadequate pay, excessively long working hours, and the lack of provident fund (PF) and employees' state insurance (ESI) facilities. Specifically, they demanded a minimum monthly wage of ₹15,000 for women and ₹20,000 for men for 12-hour shifts, arguing that current compensation fails to meet basic living standards.
Administrative Response and Resolution Efforts
Senior administrative officials intervened, assuring the protesters that their demands would be addressed in accordance with labour laws. Following these assurances, the workers agreed to resume their duties. Assistant labour commissioner Pallavi Agarwal confirmed that the management has been directed to submit relevant records for verification to ensure compliance with regulations.
Spread of Unrest to Other Industrial Areas
The protest did not remain isolated. Similar demonstrations were later reported at Vileen Industries Ltd in Sikandrabad and across various industrial units in Noida and Greater Noida. This wave of unrest signals a broader movement among contract workers in the region, who are increasingly mobilizing to advocate for better working conditions and fair treatment.
The situation underscores ongoing challenges in the industrial sector, where labour rights and wage disparities continue to spark conflicts. Authorities are monitoring developments closely to prevent further escalation and ensure adherence to legal frameworks.
