Lemon Prices Skyrocket in Andhra Pradesh, Creating Statewide Crisis
Vijayawada: A dramatic surge in lemon prices has plunged Andhra Pradesh into a severe crisis, with markets across the state witnessing unprecedented rates. This sharp increase is driven by a combination of falling production and soaring demand, creating significant challenges for both consumers and farmers.
Record High Prices at Podalakur Market
At the Podalakur lemon market in Sri Potti Sriramulu Nellore district, prices reached a historic peak on Friday. An 80 kg bag was sold for as much as ₹10,000, a level not seen in the past decade. This marks a stark contrast to the situation just a few weeks ago, when farmers were grappling with poor returns and low buyer interest.
D Anjaneya Reddy, a local farmer, highlighted the sudden turnaround. "There were no buyers and prices were very low just a few weeks ago. Now the demand has skyrocketed," he said. For many growers in the upland region, lemon cultivation is a critical source of livelihood, making this price volatility particularly impactful.
Supply Shortages and Rising Demand
Traders point to strong demand from northern markets, especially Delhi and northeastern states, as a key factor behind the price spike. M Niranjan Kumar, a trader, explained, "Nearly 15 lorry loads of lemons are being transported daily from Podalakur to different parts of the country, but supply is limited due to low yield." This supply-demand imbalance has pushed retail prices to nearly ₹5 per lemon in several areas, with some reports indicating prices as high as ₹10 per fruit.
The crisis is not confined to Nellore district. A similar trend is being observed at the Eluru Lemon Market, signaling a statewide supply crunch. Unseasonal weather conditions and reduced output have significantly hampered availability, exacerbating the situation.
Consumer Impact and Summer Concerns
As lemon prices soar, many households are being forced to reconsider their purchasing habits. K Nandini, a homemaker, shared her concerns: "Lemon water is considered a refreshing summer drink that restores electrolytes. But poor availability and skyrocketing prices are making us think of alternatives." With summer demand expected to rise further, both consumers and traders fear that prices may climb even higher in the coming weeks, intensifying the ongoing crisis.
The sudden price hike has led to lemons being removed from many shopping lists, highlighting the broader economic strain on families. This situation underscores the vulnerabilities in agricultural supply chains and the impact of climatic factors on crop yields.
Broader Implications for Agriculture
This lemon price crisis in Andhra Pradesh sheds light on larger issues within the agricultural sector. Farmers who were previously struggling with low returns are now facing a different set of challenges due to market volatility. The reliance on lemon cultivation in certain regions makes communities particularly susceptible to such fluctuations.
As the state grapples with this issue, stakeholders are calling for measures to stabilize prices and ensure adequate supply. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether the crisis deepens or if interventions can provide relief to affected parties.
