CAG Report Flags Weak Tracks in Lucknow Metro, Raises Safety Concerns
Lucknow Metro Tracks Below Standards, CAG Report Warns

CAG Audit Exposes Lucknow Metro's Substandard Track Hardness

A recent report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) has raised serious alarms about the structural integrity of the Lucknow Metro system. The audit, which was tabled in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly by State Finance Minister Suresh Khanna on Friday, highlights that the metro's tracks are operating on weaker rails than the prescribed Indian Railway standards.

Inspection Findings by IIT Kanpur

According to the CAG report, an inspection conducted by IIT Kanpur revealed significant deficiencies in the hardness levels of the Lucknow Metro tracks. The findings indicate that the track strength in the depot areas ranged from 229 to 242 BHN (Brinell Hardness Number), while on the main line, it was between 291 and 308 BHN. These numbers fall far below the mandatory requirements set by Indian Railway standards.

Implications of Lower Hardness Levels

IIT Kanpur experts have warned that lower hardness in rails can lead to accelerated wear and tear. This not only increases maintenance costs but also reduces the overall lifespan of both the rails and the train wheels. If the hardness of the wheels does not properly match that of the rails, it could cause deformation over time, potentially compromising the stability and smooth operation of the metro trains. Such issues pose a direct threat to passenger safety, as uneven or weakened tracks can lead to operational disruptions and accidents.

Required Standards vs. Current Reality

Indian Railway standards mandate strict hardness requirements to ensure durability and safety in metro systems. Specifically:

  • Rails used in depot areas (HH 880 grade) must have a minimum hardness of 260 BHN.
  • For main line tracks (HH 1080 grade), the required hardness range is between 340 and 390 BHN.
Harder rails are essential for longevity and minimizing wear and tear, yet the Lucknow Metro's current levels are significantly below these benchmarks.

Broader Concerns and Future Actions

The CAG report underscores a critical gap in quality control and adherence to safety protocols in the Lucknow Metro project. Authorities are now urged to address these deficiencies promptly to prevent further deterioration and ensure the system's reliability. This revelation calls for immediate corrective measures, including potential track replacements or upgrades, to align with national standards and safeguard commuter well-being.
