Maharashtra EV Registrations Show Strong Recovery in 2025-26

Electric vehicle (EV) registrations in Maharashtra experienced a significant rebound in the fiscal year 2025-26, rising by 13% after a sharp 19% decline in the previous year, according to the latest state economic survey report. This reversal highlights a positive shift in the state's EV adoption landscape, even as the overall vehicle base continues to expand steadily.

Overall Vehicle Growth and Infrastructure Pressure

The total number of motor vehicles on Maharashtra's roads reached 5.3 crore as of January 1, 2026, marking an 8.2% increase from 4.9 crore a year earlier. Two-wheelers remained the dominant segment, growing from 3.5 crore to 3.8 crore during the same period. This growth has intensified pressure on road infrastructure, with vehicle density climbing to 153 vehicles per kilometer of road length on roads maintained by the National Highways Authority of India, Public Works Department, and Zilla Parishads.

Factors Behind the EV Slowdown and Recovery

Transport experts attribute the earlier EV slowdown in 2024-25 to persistent range anxiety among buyers and inadequate charging infrastructure, which limited confidence in daily usability, especially outside major cities. However, the situation improved over the past year with the establishment of more public charging points across the state, including along highways. Power utilities also began offering discounted electricity rates for EV charging connections in housing societies, reducing operating costs and making home and community charging more viable, as noted by an EV expert working with the government.

Another key factor aiding the recovery was the widening product pipeline. Over the last year, manufacturers launched multiple new EV models across hatchbacks, SUVs, and premium segments, expanding consumer choice. This trend was particularly visible in electric two-wheelers, which continued to account for a significant share of EV adoption due to lower upfront costs and suitability for urban commutes.

Current EV Statistics and State Policy Goals

As of December 2025, Maharashtra registered 9,27,061 battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The state's electric vehicle policy aims to accelerate adoption and manufacturing, expand charging infrastructure in urban and rural areas, support public transport electrification, and promote research, innovation, and skill development to position Maharashtra as a leading EV hub.

This recovery underscores the importance of addressing infrastructure challenges and enhancing product availability to sustain growth in the EV sector, aligning with broader environmental and economic goals.
