Indian automaker Mahindra has officially entered the three-row electric SUV segment with the launch of the highly anticipated XEV 9S. The electric vehicle, which serves as the EV counterpart to the popular XUV700, comes with a starting price of Rs 19.95 lakh (ex-showroom) and brings several enhancements over its petrol-powered sibling.
Pricing and Availability Timeline
Mahindra has announced a clear roadmap for the XEV 9S rollout. Test drives will commence on December 5, giving potential buyers their first hands-on experience with the vehicle. The company will open bookings on January 14, followed by the first deliveries starting from January 23, 2026.
The XEV 9S price range stretches from Rs 19.95 lakh for the entry-level variant to Rs 29.45 lakh for the top-spec Pack Three Above model. During the launch presentation, Mahindra executives directly positioned the fully loaded version as a competitor to luxury electric SUVs priced around Rs 80 lakh, highlighting its exceptional value proposition.
Performance and Battery Specifications
The XEV 9S will be offered with three distinct battery pack options to cater to different customer needs and budgets. The 59 kWh battery produces 228 bhp, while the new 70 kWh setup delivers 241 bhp. The range-topping 79 kWh battery pack generates an impressive 282 bhp.
All three versions maintain a consistent 380 Nm of torque and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just seven seconds. This performance places the top-spec variant in the territory of some premium electric SUVs, despite its more accessible pricing. The flagship model also boasts a top speed of 200 kmph and features a 10.9-metre turning circle for enhanced maneuverability.
Design and Premium Features
The XEV 9S showcases Mahindra's new electric design language with several distinctive elements. The front fascia features a shut-off grille, L-shaped LED DRLs, vertically stacked projector lamps, and a full-width LED light bar. The sides are characterized by flush-fitted door handles, aero-optimized wheels, and roof rails.
Inside the cabin, Mahindra has packed the XEV 9S with premium amenities. The dashboard features a three-screen layout, complemented by additional screens for second-row passengers. Other notable features include a panoramic sunroof, Harman Kardon audio system, powered tailgate, ambient lighting, and reclining second-row seats.
The top variant takes luxury further with dynamic ambient lighting, ventilated second-row seats, and an in-cabin camera that supports live monitoring. Practical considerations include 394 litres of boot space and a 150-litre frunk (front trunk), providing ample storage for family trips.
Advanced Safety and Technology
Safety has been a key focus in the XEV 9S development. The SUV offers up to seven airbags, including a knee airbag, along with Level 2+ ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) for semi-autonomous driving capabilities.
Additional safety technologies include brake-by-wire system, blind view monitoring, and intelligent emergency braking. Higher variants are equipped with Mahindra's Secure360 Pro, which is a live vehicle surveillance system accessible through the connected car app.
The top-spec model further enhances the safety package with advanced ADAS featuring multiple radars and an Augmented Reality Head-Up Display (AR HUD) that projects important information directly onto the windshield.
Mahindra's XEV 9S represents a significant milestone in India's electric vehicle journey, combining the practicality of a three-row SUV with cutting-edge electric technology and premium features at competitive price points. The vehicle is poised to challenge established players in both the mainstream and luxury EV segments when deliveries begin in 2026.
