Mapusa Traders Launch Campaign Against Luxury Mall in Bus Stand Redevelopment
Traders in Mapusa, Goa, have initiated a strong opposition to the proposed inclusion of a luxury shopping mall within the ambitious Rs 192-crore redevelopment plan for the KTC bus stand. They have commenced a signature campaign with the clear demand to scrap this aspect of the proposal entirely.
Project Details and Trader Concerns
The extensive redevelopment project is slated to cover 27,000 square meters of land and will be executed under a design, build, finance, operate, and transfer (DBFOT) model. However, local small traders are raising alarms that the introduction of a luxury mall could severely undermine the historic Mapusa market, which serves as a crucial economic backbone for North Goa.
"Our businesses are already facing significant challenges due to the rise of online shopping and competition from existing malls," stated Jitendra Falari, president of the Mapusa Traders Association. "The proposed luxury mall poses a direct threat to the livelihoods of more than 2,500 families who have been operating their businesses here for multiple generations."
Infrastructure Neglect and Alternative Demands
Falari emphasized that the traders' association is fundamentally opposed to investing Rs 192 crore in a luxury mall while critical infrastructure in the existing market remains in a state of disrepair. He pointed out that roads, sewerage systems, and power lines suffer from poor conditions due to a persistent lack of funding.
Traders argue that the town has more pressing needs than a modern shopping complex. They highlight an urgent requirement for basic amenities such as adequate parking facilities and efficient waste management systems.
Call for Government Action
The business community has formally urged the government to restrict the scope of the new bus station strictly to essential passenger conveniences, including parking and a canteen. Additionally, they have demanded that the allocated funds be redirected towards the comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the Mapusa municipal market to preserve its economic and cultural significance.
