Maruti Suzuki Brezza: A Decade of Success in India's Compact SUV Segment
Maruti Suzuki made a significant entry into the compact SUV market by introducing the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza at the 2016 Auto Expo. This launch coincided with a rising demand for sub-four-metre SUVs, as Indian buyers increasingly favored vehicles with higher ground clearance and SUV-style designs in smaller packages. The Vitara Brezza quickly became a cornerstone of the company's product lineup, marking a pivotal moment in Maruti Suzuki's history.
Origins and Initial Impact
The Vitara Brezza was not only Maruti Suzuki's first foray into the compact SUV segment but also the first model to be entirely designed and developed in India. Initially launched with a diesel-only engine, it established a strong presence in the market. Over the years, the SUV underwent significant transformations, including a shift from diesel to petrol engines to comply with evolving emission standards, along with feature upgrades and a full-generation refresh to maintain competitiveness. Notably, the model was later rebranded simply as the Brezza, dropping the 'Vitara' prefix. As it celebrates 10 years in India, Maruti claims that the Brezza has consistently remained among the country's top 10 best-selling cars throughout the past decade.
2016: Launch of the First-Generation Maruti Brezza
The Maruti Suzuki Brezza debuted in India in March 2016, with prices starting from Rs 6.99 lakh (ex-showroom). Built on a modified version of the Global C platform, this first-generation model featured an upright stance, squared wheel arches, and contrasting roof options. Exterior highlights included LED projector headlamps with daytime running lights (DRLs), 16-inch alloy wheels, front and rear skid plates, a muscular front bonnet with an aggressive grille, and robust wheel arches.
Under the hood, it was powered exclusively by a Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre, 4-cylinder multijet diesel engine, producing 90 hp and 200 Nm of torque, paired initially with a 5-speed manual transmission; an automated manual transmission (AMT) option was introduced later. Inside, the cabin offered a dual-tone theme with amenities such as a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, steering-mounted controls, push-button start/stop, Apple CarPlay, a reverse camera, cruise control, a semi-digital instrument cluster, auto headlights, rain-sensing wipers, electric outside rearview mirrors (ORVMs), dual airbags, and anti-lock braking system (ABS).
2020: First-Generation Facelift
In early 2020, the first-generation Brezza received a mid-cycle update with minor cosmetic enhancements and additional features. Ahead of the BS6 emission norms, Maruti Suzuki discontinued the 1.3-litre diesel engine and replaced it with a 1.5-litre K15B naturally aspirated petrol unit, delivering 105 hp and 138 Nm of torque. This engine was available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
The facelifted model featured a new front grille, redesigned bumpers, updated headlamps with LED projector units and DRLs, revised tail-lamps, and new alloy wheel designs. The interior layout remained largely unchanged but was equipped with a 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen infotainment system supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with automatic climate control, diamond-cut wheels, cruise control, keyless entry with push-button start, and steering-mounted controls. This version was also rebadged by Toyota and sold as the Toyota Urban Cruiser, remaining on the market for approximately two years before being discontinued.
2022: Launch of the Second-Generation Maruti Suzuki Brezza
In 2022, Maruti Suzuki launched the second-generation model, officially rebranding it as the Brezza by removing the 'Vitara' prefix. This generation continued with the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, offered with a five-speed manual or a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission, and later introduced a CNG option.
Exterior updates included a more upright front design, a wider grille, LED headlamps with integrated DRLs, and revised bumpers. At the rear, the SUV received updated LED taillamps connected by a black strip and a redesigned tailgate, along with new alloy wheels. Inside, the cabin was refreshed with a 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system supporting wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and added features such as a heads-up display, 360-degree camera, sunroof, wireless charging, and connected car technology. Safety was enhanced with six airbags in higher variants, electronic stability control, and hill-hold assist, helping the model sustain its sales performance in the competitive segment.
Legacy and Future Prospects
Over its 10-year journey, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza has evolved from a diesel-only compact SUV to a versatile petrol and CNG model, adapting to market trends and regulatory changes. Its consistent presence among India's top-selling cars underscores its popularity and Maruti Suzuki's strategic focus on the compact SUV segment. As the automotive landscape continues to shift, the Brezza's legacy as a pioneering and enduring model in India remains firmly established.
