Maruti Suzuki has unveiled India's first flex-fuel car, marking a significant milestone in the country's automotive industry. The vehicle was launched on the eve of World Environment Day, in the presence of Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari and Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri.
Key Features of the Flex-Fuel Vehicle
The flex-fuel car is capable of running on a blend of petrol and ethanol, with ethanol content ranging from 20% to 85%. This technology aims to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and lower vehicular emissions. The car is based on the popular Maruti Suzuki model and has been modified to accommodate the flex-fuel engine.
Government Support and Environmental Impact
Union Minister Nitin Gadkari emphasized the government's commitment to promoting alternative fuels. He stated that flex-fuel vehicles are a step towards achieving energy independence and reducing pollution. Hardeep Singh Puri highlighted the potential of ethanol as a renewable fuel source, which can be produced from agricultural waste.
The launch aligns with India's goal to increase the use of biofuels. Flex-fuel technology is already prevalent in countries like Brazil and the United States. India's adoption could pave the way for more sustainable transportation.
Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce more flex-fuel models in the coming years, subject to market response and infrastructure development. The company is also working on setting up ethanol blending stations across the country.
This initiative is expected to benefit farmers by creating a demand for ethanol production. It also supports the government's target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2025.
