Meghalaya Witnesses Exponential Growth in Women's Self-Help Groups

In a remarkable development for women's empowerment and rural livelihoods, Meghalaya has experienced a surge in self-help group (SHG) membership, with numbers skyrocketing from 40,000 members eight years ago to an impressive 5.8 lakh at present. Chief Minister Conrad Sangma shared this information during a session in the Assembly on Wednesday, highlighting the state's commitment to fostering economic independence among women.

Credit Flow and SHG Expansion Details

The growth in SHG membership is accompanied by a substantial increase in credit flows, which have risen from under Rs 100 crore to nearly Rs 1,100 crore mobilized so far. Sangma elaborated that the number of SHGs in Meghalaya has expanded from approximately 4,000-5,000 in the 2018-19 period to about 53,000 today. This expansion covers nearly 90% of households in the state, demonstrating widespread participation and impact.

Key mechanisms facilitating this growth include:

  • The Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society plays a crucial role in providing bank linkages for SHGs.
  • SHG members can access loans without collateral at a favorable interest rate of around 7%.
  • Banks have disbursed approximately Rs 755 crore to these groups, with over 40,888 groups consistently servicing their repayments.
  • Notably, nearly 95% of loans are repaid on time, indicating strong financial discipline and sustainability.

Simplified Formation and Accessibility

Chief Minister Sangma emphasized the ease of forming SHGs, noting that a minimum of 10 to 15 women are required, with no registration necessary. This streamlined approach has encouraged more women to join, fostering community-based economic initiatives. The focus on accessibility and support has been instrumental in driving the state's rural development agenda, empowering women to take charge of their financial futures.

The data presented underscores Meghalaya's progress in enhancing women's livelihoods through collaborative efforts and strategic financial interventions.
