Mizoram Dairy Sector Gets Major Boost with Strategic MoU Signing
In a significant development for Mizoram's agricultural economy, the Mizoram Milk Producers' Cooperative Union Limited (Mulco) and the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) have formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening and developing milk production and dairy processing capabilities across the state.
High-Level Signing Ceremony in Aizawl
The MoU signing ceremony took place in Aizawl with Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Cooperation Minister PC Vanlalruata presiding over the event. The agreement was officially signed by three key representatives:
- Udit Rai Prakash, Secretary for Cooperation representing the Government of Mizoram
- S Rajeev, Executive Director of NDDB
- Lalhmunliani, Managing Director of Mulco
White Revolution 2.0: A Comprehensive Dairy Development Plan
This collaboration falls under the Ministry of Cooperation's flagship scheme, White Revolution 2.0, which aims to transform India's dairy sector. Under this agreement:
- NDDB will prepare a comprehensive dairy development plan specifically tailored for Mizoram's unique requirements and potential
- Technical support and assistance will be provided in all required areas to enhance dairy processing capabilities
- Mulco will implement interventions outlined in the development plan throughout the state
Addressing Mizoram's Milk Production Challenges
The timing of this agreement is particularly crucial given recent statistics. According to the Bureau of Animal Husbandry & Statistics (BAHS) 2024–25 report, Mizoram recorded the lowest daily milk production in the entire northeast region during 2024–25, with just 64.4 thousand kilograms per day (TKgPD).
Chief Minister's Vision for Dairy Development
In his address during the ceremony, Chief Minister Lalduhoma emphasized the transformative potential of this agreement. He highlighted several key points:
"This agreement will significantly enhance milk production while improving livelihoods and creating better income opportunities for our livestock farmers," stated CM Lalduhoma.
The Chief Minister noted that Mizoram has a strong tradition of animal husbandry and possesses land resources particularly suitable for livestock rearing. "By integrating modern technology and improved practices, the state's potential can be harnessed more productively," he added.
To ensure effective implementation, CM Lalduhoma called for establishing a Project Implementation Unit (PIU) that would monitor progress and maintain accountability throughout the development process.
Strategic Importance for Mizoram's Agricultural Economy
This MoU represents a strategic move to address Mizoram's dairy sector challenges through structured planning and expert guidance. The collaboration between Mulco and NDDB is expected to:
- Boost milk production through modern techniques
- Enhance dairy processing infrastructure
- Create sustainable livelihood opportunities for farmers
- Improve the state's self-sufficiency in dairy products
- Contribute to nutritional security across Mizoram
The agreement marks a proactive step toward transforming Mizoram's dairy landscape, potentially serving as a model for other northeastern states facing similar agricultural development challenges.
