Maharashtra MSRTC Launches Major Fleet Expansion to Combat Financial Losses

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a significant fleet expansion plan, with the immediate addition of 8,300 buses this year. This strategic move is aimed at improving the financial health of the state transport utility, which is currently grappling with daily losses of almost Rs 1.5 crore.

Long-Term Strategy and Government Approval

According to a release quoting State Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, the corporation has received in-principle approval from the state government for a long-term strategy. This strategy involves purchasing 20,000 to 25,000 buses over the next few years, with the 8,300 buses marking the first phase of implementation in the current year.

Minister Sarnaik emphasized that increasing the number of buses will directly lead to a rise in passenger numbers. Consequently, this is expected to boost MSRTC's income automatically, helping to offset the ongoing financial challenges.

Details of the New Bus Additions

MSRTC officials have provided a breakdown of the new buses to be integrated into the fleet:

  • 3,000 buses with 55-seat capacity: These will be introduced in batches starting from March.
  • 5,000 normal buses: The tendering process for their procurement is in the final stages.
  • 200 luxury buses: Intended to compete with private transporters.
  • 100 midi-buses: Designed to cater to the travel needs of people in remote areas.

Current Fleet and Future Projections

A senior MSRTC official highlighted that the corporation currently operates a fleet of approximately 12,600 buses. With this expansion, the fleet size is set to increase considerably in the coming days. The enhanced fleet is projected to serve around 70 lakh to 75 lakh passengers daily, up from current levels.

The official further noted that the daily expenditure of MSRTC ranges between Rs 34 crore and Rs 35 crore, while income stands at about Rs 33 crore per day. This gap contributes to the substantial daily losses.

Balancing Public Service and Financial Viability

Minister Sarnaik reiterated that MSRTC is not a profit-making entity but serves as a lifeline for the common man in Maharashtra. However, achieving a balance between expenditure and income is crucial to avoid losses. He expressed confidence that the arrival of new buses will lead to increased income, thereby strengthening MSRTC's financial position.

This fleet expansion represents a proactive step by MSRTC to enhance its operational efficiency and financial stability, ensuring better service for millions of passengers across the state.
