In a significant achievement for Nagaland, the state's Nagami Mithun breed has now received official registration. The Breed Registration Committee of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) granted this recognition. This development marks a proud moment for the region's agricultural community.
Certificate Presentation in New Delhi
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan personally handed over the breed registration certificate. The ceremony took place in New Delhi on Wednesday. Dr Girish Patil S, director of the ICAR–National Research Centre on Mithun in Nagaland, accepted the document.
Dr Harshit Kumar, a scientist at the institute, also attended the event. Other team members from the research centre were present as well. The occasion was the animal breed registration certificate and breed conservation award distribution ceremony.
Widespread Presence Across Nagaland
The Nagami Mithun breed is commonly found in many districts of Nagaland. These areas include Kohima, Peren, and Chümoukedima. Zunheboto, Phek, and Tuensang districts also host this breed.
Other districts with Nagami Mithun populations are Kiphire, Noklak, and Shamator. Mon, Wokha, Tseminyu, and Longleng complete the list. This wide distribution highlights the breed's importance to the state.
The ICAR National Research Centre on Mithun issued a release about this event on Thursday. The announcement confirms the official status of the Nagami Mithun breed. This registration will likely support conservation efforts and boost local agriculture.
