Nagpur's Private Bus Services Face Operational Crisis Due to Diesel Shortages
The ongoing fuel supply crisis in Nagpur is now severely impacting private long-distance bus operations, with operators issuing warnings about potential service cuts if diesel availability does not stabilize promptly. Hundreds of private buses depart daily from the city, transporting thousands of passengers across Maharashtra and to neighboring states, but this critical transportation network faces unprecedented disruption.
Operational Challenges and Fuel Procurement Issues
Erratic diesel availability at fuel stations throughout Nagpur and surrounding districts has created significant operational difficulties for bus companies. Nagpur Travels Association president Baba Dawre confirmed the shortage is already affecting services substantially. "One of my buses traveling to Pune encountered serious difficulties finding diesel at multiple fuel pumps," Dawre explained. "The crew had to procure fuel in small quantities from different locations just to complete the journey and return the vehicle."
Operators traditionally depend on specific fuel stations near the city for their regular supply needs, but the current situation has deteriorated markedly. Many fuel outlets are now demanding advance payments after oil companies ceased extending credit facilities to operators. Compounding the problem, several stations have completely run dry, creating a perfect storm of supply challenges that threatens the entire private bus ecosystem.
Questioning Official Supply Claims
Bus operator Mahendra Luley has raised serious questions about official claims regarding adequate fuel supply in the region. He pointed out that despite diesel typically having lower consumption rates than petrol within the city, it remains unavailable at numerous fuel pumps. "While petrol shortages might be attributed to high demand patterns, the complete lack of diesel availability raises legitimate concerns about actual stock levels and distribution mechanisms," Luley stated emphatically.
Luley further warned that if the current situation persists without meaningful improvement, operators may have no choice but to halt services temporarily. This would create massive transportation gaps for thousands of daily commuters who depend on these private bus services for intercity travel.
Lack of Viable Alternatives and Economic Constraints
Operators have highlighted the complete absence of practical alternatives in the current scenario. The transition to electric buses presents a theoretical solution but remains economically unfeasible for most operators. Electric buses carry a price tag of approximately ₹1.9 crore each, compared to just ₹90 lakh for conventional diesel buses—more than double the investment cost.
This substantial price differential, combined with infrastructure limitations for electric vehicle charging, makes any immediate transition impossible for operators already struggling with operational costs and fuel availability issues.

With uncertainty continuing to cloud the fuel supply situation, operators fear prolonged shortages could severely disrupt intercity travel originating from Nagpur.
