Nagpur PWD to Establish ₹1.5 Crore Skill Development Centre in Besa to Boost Local Economy

In a significant move to enhance employment opportunities and strengthen the local Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) ecosystem, the Public Works Department (PWD) in Nagpur is set to establish a state-of-the-art skill development centre in Besa. The project, with an estimated cost of ₹1.5 crore, aims to transform the region's economic landscape by empowering residents with practical, industry-relevant skills.

Focus on Youth and Women for Self-Employment

The proposed facility is specifically designed to equip local youth and women with vocational training, enabling them to pursue self-employment and small-scale entrepreneurship. According to a senior PWD official, the centre will serve as a hub for multiple training programmes tailored to the needs of the local population. "The facility is being developed to promote self-employment, particularly for women-led self-help groups (bachat gats) in the area, helping them scale up their activities," the official stated.

Comprehensive Training Modules and Infrastructure Support

Training modules at the centre are expected to include a range of skills such as:

  • Other small-scale business activities

Officials emphasized that the centre will not only provide training but also offer space and basic infrastructure for individuals who lack resources to start or operate their businesses independently. "If someone has the skill but not the space to work, this centre will support them," the official added, highlighting the project's holistic approach to grassroots entrepreneurship.

Government Support and Integration with National Schemes

The initiative has garnered strong support from Revenue Minister and local MLA Chandrashekhar Bawankule, who is actively involved in promoting the project. Civic authorities believe the centre will play a crucial role in nurturing sustainable livelihoods in Besa and adjoining areas. Bharat Nandanwar, Chief Officer of the Besa Nagar Panchayat, noted that the upcoming National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) initiatives will further complement the project. "The skill development centre will host multiple training programmes and work in tandem with NULM schemes, which will soon be rolled out. Together, these efforts will significantly boost employment opportunities," he explained.

Expected Impact on Local MSME Ecosystem

This strategic investment is poised to address key challenges in the local economy by:

  1. Providing accessible vocational training to underserved communities
  2. Fostering entrepreneurship and small business development
  3. Creating a supportive environment for MSME growth
  4. Generating long-term, sustainable employment opportunities

The PWD's initiative represents a forward-thinking approach to regional development, aligning with broader goals of economic empowerment and self-reliance. As the project moves forward, it is expected to set a benchmark for similar skill development efforts across Maharashtra, contributing to the state's overall economic resilience and growth.
