Namakkal Body Builders Association Urges Tamil Nadu Government to Revive Abandoned Truck Industrial Park

The Namakkal Body Builders Association has made a formal appeal to the Tamil Nadu government to revive the long-abandoned truck body building industrial park located near Velakavundampatti. This urgent request comes as over 200 truck body building units in Namakkal district continue to operate within congested city limits, facing significant logistical and operational challenges.

Background of the Industrial Park Project

In 2016, the Tamil Nadu government initiated plans to establish a dedicated industrial park specifically for the truck body building industry to address growing congestion issues and improve industry standards. The Namakkal Body Builders Association, representing 289 members, proactively purchased 53 acres of land in the Puttur panchayat area for approximately Rs 6 crore and transferred this land to the government for the project.

"The site was officially named the Namakkal District Heavy Vehicle Construction Industrial Park," explained Periyasamy Thiyagarajan, a prominent truck body building industry owner in Namakkal. "This was envisioned as a comprehensive solution to streamline our industry and provide better working conditions."

Infrastructure Development and Current Status

The project received a substantial financial allocation of Rs 13.68 crore from the government. Initial infrastructure work included:

  • Construction of roads within the park premises
  • Building of a water tank facility
  • Establishment of a sub-power station

Despite these developments, the industrial park remains largely unused. The primary reason for this stagnation is the absence of basic amenities, particularly the lack of functional water connections despite the construction of an overhead water tank. This critical deficiency has prevented the relocation of existing truck body building units to the designated park area.

Recent Advocacy Efforts

Namakkal MP VS Matheswaran has taken up the cause, recently meeting with State Industries Minister T R B Rajaa to submit a formal petition urging the revival of the truck industrial park. "It is good to set up a truck industrial park. Steps should be taken to start it in the allocated area," Matheswaran emphasized during the meeting.

The association's persistent efforts highlight the growing frustration among industry stakeholders who invested significant resources in the project's initial phase, only to see it languish incomplete for years. The revival of this industrial park is seen as crucial for:

  1. Reducing urban congestion caused by scattered industrial units
  2. Improving operational efficiency for truck body builders
  3. Creating better infrastructure for future industry growth
  4. Providing standardized facilities for all industry participants

The Namakkal district, known as a major hub for truck body building in Tamil Nadu, stands to benefit substantially from the completion of this long-delayed project. Industry representatives remain hopeful that renewed government attention will finally bring the necessary basic amenities to make the industrial park operational and fulfill its original purpose of transforming the local truck body building sector.
