Nellore International Airport Set to Transform Andhra Pradesh's Infrastructure Landscape
Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh is poised for a significant infrastructure transformation as the long-awaited Nellore international airport project is scheduled to commence operations at Dagadarthi in the near future. This development marks a pivotal moment for the region's economic and logistical growth.
Strategic Importance and Economic Impact
Touted as the eighth airport to be established in the state of Andhra Pradesh, the Dagadarthi airport is designed to fortify the government's initiative to build a future-ready, multimodal logistics and industrial ecosystem in Nellore district. According to Nellore TDP MP Vemireddy Prabhakar Reddy, the airport is envisioned as more than just an aviation facility.
"The Dagadarthi airport, spanning an extensive area of 1,332.8 acres, is strategically planned to integrate air connectivity with ports, highways, and industrial zones," Reddy emphasized. "This integration will provide a substantial advantage for exporters and manufacturers by sharply reducing logistics costs. Consequently, it is expected to attract fresh investments in industry, warehousing, and allied services, while generating significant employment opportunities in construction, aviation, logistics, and related sectors."
Phased Development and Capacity Planning
The airport's development is structured in multiple phases to ensure scalability and efficiency. Phase 1 has been meticulously designed to accommodate 1.4 million passengers annually, with the master plan allowing for future expansion to handle up to 15 million passengers per year. Additionally, provisions have been made for a dedicated cargo facility, aligning with the region's growing industrial output and port-led trade potential.
Vemireddy Reddy highlighted the state government's commitment, noting that Rs 54 crore was allocated in January this year to expedite land acquisition and establish essential infrastructure, including electricity, water, and telephone connectivity. He expressed confidence that construction work will begin as planned by June-July this year.
Current Status and Administrative Preparations
Explaining the current progress, Nellore district collector Himanshu Shukla detailed that private participants are currently invited to submit their Request For Proposals (RFP) for the development, operation, and maintenance of the airport. The deadline for these submissions is set for the end of this month, with the successful bidder expected to be announced by May.
To facilitate public access and minimize disruption, the district administration is actively working on creating an alternate road to replace the existing one, ensuring connectivity to villages beyond the airport. Furthermore, a culvert will be constructed on the upstream channel, with measures in place to leave the stream untouched.
"The government has announced plans to launch the works by June-July this year, and we are fully prepared to meet this deadline," stated Nellore collector Himanshu Shukla, underscoring the administration's readiness to support this transformative project.
