New 'Govardhan' Mustard Variety Approved, Boosts UP Yield by 7.81%
New High-Yield Mustard 'Govardhan' Approved for India

In a significant boost for India's oilseed production, the Government of India has officially notified a new, high-yielding mustard variety named 'Govardhan'. This development is set to empower farmers, particularly in Uttar Pradesh, with a resilient and productive crop option.

Official Notification and Key Features

The Central Seed Committee, operating under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, issued the formal notification for the variety on December 31, 2025. The notification, bearing number SO 2123 (E), clears 'Govardhan' for sale and cultivation across the country.

Developed as KMR L 17_5, this variety stands out for its exceptional adaptability and output. Key agronomic features include:

  • High Oil Content: Approximately 39.6%, promising better returns for oil extraction.
  • Short Duration: The crop matures in just 120-125 days.
  • Superior Yield: It yields 7.81% more than existing national check varieties.
  • Enhanced Resilience: Built-in resistance to common biotic (diseases, pests) and abiotic (environmental) stresses.

A Game-Changer for Late Sowing in Uttar Pradesh

According to mustard breeder Professor Mahak Singh from Krishi Vishwavidyalaya in Kanpur, 'Govardhan' is specifically tailored for the challenging agricultural calendar of Uttar Pradesh. Its most notable advantage is its suitability for extremely late sowing conditions, between November 20 and 30.

This characteristic makes it a valuable safety net for farmers who face delays in their cropping cycle due to various reasons. Professor Singh emphasized that the variety is suitable for all agro-climatic conditions within Uttar Pradesh, making it a versatile and reliable choice.

Impact on Mustard Cultivation Landscape

The introduction of 'Govardhan' is poised to be a game-changer in the mustard production sector. By offering a combination of high productivity, stress tolerance, and suitability for late planting, it directly addresses key constraints faced by farmers.

This new variety is expected to contribute significantly to the growth and productivity of mustard cultivation areas in Uttar Pradesh and beyond. It provides farmers with a preferred choice for better yield and resilience, potentially increasing income stability and supporting national goals of edible oil self-sufficiency.

With its official notification, 'Govardhan' is now ready to move from research stations to farmers' fields, marking a promising step forward for Indian agriculture.
