Nissan India Unveils Ambitious Growth Strategy with New SUV Lineup
Nissan Motor India (NMI) has announced an aggressive expansion plan, aiming to quadruple its domestic sales and boost exports by 40% by March 2028. The company revealed this strategy during the unveiling of its new seven-seater MPV, the Gravite, in Kolkata.
Expanding Portfolio to Drive Sales Momentum
According to Mudit Gupta, NMI's national strategy officer and sales head, the company plans to expand its portfolio from the current single product to four vehicles by March 2027. This expansion will include the Gravite MPV, the C-segment five-seater SUV Tekton, and a C-segment seven-seater SUV scheduled for launch in early 2027.
"The next 12-13 months will be crucial for the company as we add three products," Gupta emphasized during his conversation with media representatives. "This will expand our presence from the Rs 6-12 lakh segment at present to over Rs 20 lakh."
Current Performance and Future Targets
Nissan India achieved consolidated sales of 99,000 units in 2024-25 across domestic and international markets with its sole product, the B-segment compact SUV Magnite. This represented the company's highest sales figure in seven years, comprising 28,097 domestic units and 71,230 export units.
For the current fiscal year 2025-26, the company is on track to achieve similar numbers, having registered 17,662 domestic sales and 69,769 export units until January 2026. Looking ahead, NMI aims to reach sales of 100,000 units each in both domestic and export markets.
Infrastructure and Market Expansion Plans
To support this growth trajectory, Nissan plans to significantly expand its market presence. The company intends to increase its touchpoints from the current 150 to 250 by March 2027, enhancing accessibility and customer reach across India.
The delivery schedule for new models includes:
- Gravite MPV deliveries beginning next month
- Tekton SUV launch in approximately two months with deliveries starting from July
- Seven-seater SUV launch in the first quarter of 2027
Global Export Strategy and Alliance Synergies
Nissan currently exports the Magnite and C-segment sedan Sunny to 65 countries, with the Sunny manufactured exclusively for international markets. The company's spokesperson confirmed that both the Tekton and its seven-seater iteration will be exported globally under Nissan's 'One Car, One World' philosophy.
The expanded portfolio will also strengthen Nissan's position relative to its alliance partner Renault. The Nissan Magnite shares its platform with the Renault Kiger, while the newly introduced Gravite is based on the Renault Triber. Similarly, the upcoming Tekton will utilize the recently unveiled Renault Duster platform, with the seven-seater variants also sharing common vehicle architectures.
This strategic expansion represents Nissan India's most comprehensive growth initiative in recent years, positioning the company to compete more effectively across multiple vehicle segments while leveraging global platform sharing for cost efficiency and market responsiveness.
