In a concerning incident at Greater Noida, six vehicles sustained damage after refuelling at an Indian Oil pump, leading to an official inquiry that uncovered groundwater seepage into the outlet's underground storage tank and dispensing unit. This contamination rendered approximately 12,000 litres of fuel unusable and prompted immediate action from authorities.
Incident Unfolds at Pi-2 Filling Station
The issue came to light at the Pi-2 filling station when consumers reported their vehicles breaking down shortly after taking fuel on Saturday. As videos of stranded vehicles circulated on social media, public concern escalated, with rumours spreading about potential fuel shortages linked to the West Asia conflict. District supply officer Smriti Gautam confirmed that her department received complaints from six affected consumers, whose vehicles developed faults post-refuelling.
Official Response and Investigation Findings
Following the complaints, officials conducted an inspection alongside Indian Oil Corporation representatives, ordering an inquiry and suspending sales at the pump. The probe, concluded on Sunday, revealed that groundwater seepage had mixed with fuel in both the underground tank and dispensing system. Repair work to address the seepage was underway on Monday, with sales not resuming until late evening, as authorities prioritized safety measures.
Compensation and Public Reassurance
Gautam assured that the affected consumers would receive compensation from the oil company for vehicle damages. She emphasized that petrol sales would only restart after the company completed its standard procedures, ensuring no recurrence of such contamination. The incident also sparked broader public anxiety over fuel availability, but officials urged calm, clarifying that there is no shortage in the city and advising against panic.
