Unseasonal Rains and Hailstorms Devastate North Maharashtra Crops

Unseasonal rainfall and severe hailstorms have inflicted widespread crop damage across north Maharashtra, impacting more than 1.14 lakh hectares of agricultural land and affecting approximately 1.65 lakh farmers between March 19 and April 2, according to a primary assessment by the state agriculture department. Nashik district has emerged as the worst-affected region in this agricultural crisis.

Destructive Weather Patterns and Crop Losses

Agriculture officials reported that repeated spells of heavy and unseasonal rain on March 19, 20, 29, 30, 31, and April 1-2 proved particularly destructive for standing crops. Hailstorms in some areas further aggravated the losses, compounding the challenges for farmers already grappling with unpredictable weather conditions.

In Nashik district alone, crops spread over 58,928 hectares were affected, impacting 81,641 farmers from 259 villages. Onion cultivation suffered the most severe damage, with losses reported on nearly 44,000 hectares. Other crops, including wheat, maize, vegetables, bajra, pomegranate, and banana, were also significantly damaged.

Government Response and Relief Efforts

In the aftermath of the widespread damage, cabinet ministers Girish Mahajan, Chhagan Bhujbal, and Dada Bhuse visited rain-hit areas in Nashik district to assess the situation firsthand. They directed the agriculture department to expedite the panchanama process to ensure timely assistance for affected farmers.

Officials stated that assessments are being completed at the earliest to facilitate financial relief for eligible farmers. Final compensation figures will be determined after detailed surveys and verification processes are concluded, aiming to provide support to those grappling with the agricultural losses.
