Palakkad Division of Southern Railway Achieves Historic Freight Milestone in FY 2025-26
The Palakkad division of Southern Railway has concluded the financial year 2025-26 on an unprecedented high, recording a total freight loading of 7.3 million tonnes (MT). This achievement represents the highest freight volume handled by the division in the last decade, marking a significant operational milestone.
Exceeding Targets and Demonstrating Growth
The division not only met but surpassed its annual Revenue Budget (RB) loading target of 7.3 MT, showcasing robust performance. This accomplishment reflects an 8% increase in tonnage compared to the previous financial year. Additionally, freight earnings saw a notable rise of 4.6% over the same period, underscoring enhanced efficiency and revenue generation.
Strategically positioned as a crucial rail corridor, the Palakkad division connects the three southern states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka. This geographic advantage has played a pivotal role in facilitating the movement of goods across the region.
Record-Breaking Day and Diversified Commodity Handling
On March 31, the final day of the financial year, the division set a new benchmark by achieving its highest-ever single-day freight loading. A total of 50,000 tonnes of freight was transported across 759 wagons, highlighting peak operational capacity.
The division has significantly diversified its freight portfolio, now handling 10 types of commodities, up from just five a year ago. This diversification has led to a substantial reduction in dependence on coal, which now accounts for 69% of the total loading basket, down from 85%. Notably, cement loading witnessed an extraordinary growth of 184.2% over the previous year, the highest increase recorded by any division on Indian Railways.
Regional Rankings and Agricultural Support
Within the Southern Railway zone, the Palakkad division ranks third in total freight loading, following the Chennai and Tiruchchirappalli divisions. This positioning underscores its critical role in the regional logistics network.
A key highlight of the year was the fertiliser loading of 1.341 MT, the highest figure in the last decade. This achievement is particularly significant as it supports the agricultural economy of the region, ensuring timely supply of essential inputs to farmers.
The division's performance in FY 2025-26 not only sets a new standard for freight operations but also demonstrates a strategic shift towards commodity diversification and sustainable growth, contributing to the broader economic development of southern India.
