PM Modi to Launch Micron's Semicon Facility in Gujarat This Saturday

Ahmedabad: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate Micron Technology's state-of-the-art assembly, testing, marking and packaging (ATMP) plant at Sanand in Gujarat on Saturday, according to an official announcement from the state government. This landmark facility represents one of the first large-scale semiconductor manufacturing units to become operational within India, signaling a transformative moment for the nation's electronics sector.

Massive Investment and Job Creation Potential

The plant, established by Micron Semiconductor Technology India Private Limited, involves a colossal investment of Rs 22,516 crore. Once it reaches full operational capacity, the facility is projected to create approximately 5,000 direct employment opportunities, with about 2,000 team members already working at the site. Notably, the company has emphasized its commitment to inclusive hiring practices, actively employing citizens with disabilities as operators and technicians.

Advanced Manufacturing for Global Markets

The Sanand ATMP plant will process advanced DRAM and NAND wafers sourced from Micron's global fabrication facilities, transforming them into finished integrated circuit packages, modules and solid-state drives destined for international markets. These memory and storage solutions serve as critical components across multiple high-tech industries, including:

The project is positioned as a crucial milestone in strengthening India's participation within the global electronics value chain, reducing import dependence and enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities in the strategically vital semiconductor sector.

Understanding ATMP Plant Operations

Semiconductor manufacturing begins with extracting pure silicon from sand, which is then melted and shaped into cylindrical ingots. These ingots are sliced into thin wafers, upon which complex electronic circuits are printed at fabrication units using sophisticated processes like photolithography.

At the ATMP facility, these wafers undergo several critical processes:

  1. Assembly: Individual chips are assembled into protective packages
  2. Testing: Rigorous evaluation for speed, memory capacity and reliability
  3. Marking: Application of identification details and specifications
