Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate a massive greenfield refinery project in Rajasthan, valued at Rs 79,459 crore, marking the first such initiative in the state in over a decade. The project, developed by Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), will have a refining capacity of 9 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) and a petrochemical capacity of 2.4 MMTPA.
Project Details and Capacity
The refinery, located in the Barmer district, is expected to significantly boost the region's industrial output and energy security. According to HPCL officials, the facility will produce a range of products including petrol, diesel, LPG, and petrochemical feedstocks. The project is part of the government's efforts to enhance domestic refining capacity and reduce import dependence.
Economic and Employment Impact
The refinery is projected to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs during construction and operation phases. Local authorities estimate that the project will generate employment for over 10,000 people, with a focus on skill development for local youth. Additionally, ancillary industries such as logistics, storage, and petrochemical downstream units are expected to emerge around the refinery.
Strategic Significance
This inauguration comes as India aims to increase its refining capacity to meet growing energy demand. The Rajasthan refinery will also support the government's target of achieving 20% ethanol blending in petrol by 2030, as it includes facilities for producing ethanol-blended fuels. The project aligns with the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (Self-Reliant India) initiative, reducing reliance on imported petroleum products.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister's Office, the refinery will incorporate advanced technology to minimize environmental impact, including zero liquid discharge and state-of-the-art emission control systems. The project has received environmental clearance after rigorous assessments.
Quotes and Reactions
"This refinery is a testament to our commitment to energy security and economic development in Rajasthan," said a senior HPCL executive. "It will transform the region into a petrochemical hub." Chief Minister of Rajasthan also welcomed the project, calling it a "game-changer" for the state's industrial landscape.
The inauguration ceremony is scheduled for next week, with PM Modi expected to address the gathering and highlight the project's role in India's energy future. The refinery is slated to commence commercial operations by early 2027.
