The government has been placed on high alert as the El Nino weather phenomenon triggers a significant rainfall deficit across the country. Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday directed officials to remain vigilant and extend all possible assistance to farmers facing the impact of the dry spell.
Shah's Directives to Agriculture Ministry
During a high-level review meeting, Amit Shah instructed the Agriculture Ministry and other relevant departments to proactively advise farmers on suitable crop choices. He emphasized the promotion of alternative crops that require less water, such as millets, pulses, and fodder, to mitigate the effects of the rainfall shortfall.
According to an official statement, Shah said, "We must ensure that farmers are guided with timely advisories on crop diversification and water conservation techniques. The focus should be on millets, pulses, and fodder crops which are resilient to dry conditions."
Rainfall Deficit and El Nino Impact
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported a 15% deficit in rainfall for the month of June 2026, with further shortfalls expected in July. El Nino, characterized by warming of sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean, is known to suppress monsoon rains in India, affecting agricultural output.
Officials from the Agriculture Ministry noted that the deficit could impact the sowing of kharif crops, particularly paddy, sugarcane, and cotton. The government is closely monitoring the situation and has prepared contingency plans for 600 districts across the country.
Measures to Support Farmers
The government has already initiated several measures to support farmers, including the distribution of drought-resistant seed varieties and the expansion of irrigation facilities under the Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana. Additionally, the Ministry of Agriculture is working with state governments to ensure the availability of fertilizers and pesticides.
Amit Shah also directed the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) to remain prepared for any exigency arising from the dry weather conditions. The Home Minister urged officials to coordinate with state administrations to assess the situation on the ground and provide timely relief.
Long-Term Outlook and Advisory
Experts warn that the El Nino effect could persist through the remainder of the monsoon season. The IMD has forecasted below-normal rainfall for July and August. Farmers are advised to adopt water-saving techniques such as drip irrigation and mulching, and to consider shifting to less water-intensive crops.
The government has also launched awareness campaigns through Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and local extension services to educate farmers about weather forecasts and crop management strategies. Amit Shah reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring food security and protecting farmers' livelihoods during this challenging period.
