PNGRB Assures Uninterrupted PNG Supply Amid LPG Shortage, Highlights India's Gas Self-Reliance
PNGRB: PNG Supply Uninterrupted Amid LPG Shortage, India Gas-Sufficient

PNGRB Guarantees Uninterrupted PNG Supply as LPG Shortage Hits Multiple Regions

In a significant announcement, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has confirmed that the supply of piped natural gas (PNG) will remain uninterrupted across the country, even as a sudden shortage of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) affects several parts, including West Bengal. This assurance comes amid growing concerns over energy availability in households and industries.

India's Natural Gas Production Meets Domestic and Export Demands

Speaking at an event in New Town, Kolkata, on Thursday, AK Tiwari, a member of PNGRB, highlighted India's current energy landscape. "While India still depends on imports for petroleum products and certain gases, the country is self-sufficient in natural gas production," Tiwari stated. He emphasized that India not only meets its domestic needs but also exports natural gas to other nations, showcasing a robust energy infrastructure.

Tiwari outlined the Union government's ambitious plans to enhance energy self-reliance through two key initiatives:

  • Providing PNG connections to 14 crore households nationwide.
  • Establishing 18,000 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations across the country.

These measures, he claimed, will significantly boost the use of natural gas in various sectors, including household cooking, transportation, commercial establishments, and industries, reducing dependency on imported fuels.

Stable Prices and Expansion Efforts Amid Infrastructure Challenges

Anupam Mukherjee, CEO of Bengal Gas Company Limited (BGCL), provided further insights into the local scenario. He confirmed that CNG and PNG prices will remain unchanged, offering relief to consumers amidst the LGP shortage. Additionally, Mukherjee noted that the number of PNG connections is being increased for domestic, commercial, and industrial use to cater to growing demand.

However, he acknowledged ongoing challenges in infrastructure development. "The laying of pipelines in cities, including Kolkata, is progressing slowly due to land-related issues," Mukherjee said. This highlights the logistical hurdles that need to be addressed to fully realize the government's energy goals.

The PNGRB's assurance and the outlined plans underscore a strategic push towards energy independence, leveraging India's natural gas resources to mitigate disruptions like the current LPG shortage and foster sustainable growth in the energy sector.
