Prayagraj Ganga Bridge Trials in Sept, Opening by Oct

Prayagraj: Vehicle trials on the upcoming six-lane bridge over the Ganga, connecting Stanley Road to Malak Harhar, are scheduled to begin in September. The bridge, which is nearly 94% complete, is expected to be opened for public use by October.

Construction Progress

According to officials, only five segments of the bridge are yet to be completed, which will take around two months. After this, a month-long finishing phase will begin, paving the way for trial runs of vehicular movement. Once operational, the bridge is expected to significantly reduce travel time towards Lucknow and improve connectivity across the region.

Landmark Structure

The project is being developed as a landmark structure, with a total stretch of nearly 9.90 km, including more than 5 km directly over the Ganga River. It is also being described as the state's first cable-stayed bridge equipped with modern engineering technology. The construction of the bridge began on February 16, 2021.

The design includes 44 cables across the river stretch, and the 5 km portion will be illuminated with decorative facade lighting. Officials have indicated that the lighting will reflect the colours of the national flag, enhancing the visual appeal of the structure. Like the Naini Yamuna Bridge, the new Ganga bridge is also expected to become a recreational landmark and a popular hangout destination for residents.

Multi-Modal Features

The bridge has been designed with dedicated provisions for pedestrians and cyclists on both sides, ensuring multi-modal usage and improved safety for non-motorised traffic. Authorities believe this feature will make the structure more inclusive and environment-friendly.

Official Statement

Project director, Ministry of Road Transport, Mohmmad Nasratullah Khan, said: “The construction is progressing rapidly, with final segment installation and finishing work expected to be completed within the next three months. Preparations for vehicle trials will begin by September, followed by formal handover to the public in October.” He added that once operational, the bridge is expected to become a major transport corridor as well as an iconic landmark for Prayagraj.
