Pune: Airlines like Air India and IndiGo have curtailed domestic operations across India due to the West Asia conflict, but Pune airport remains an exception. Airport director Santosh Dhoke confirmed on Sunday that 208 of the available 235 slots are currently occupied, indicating steady flight movements.
Growth Since 2014
Speaking about the Yatri Suvidha Diwas scheduled for Monday, Dhoke highlighted the airport's growth since 2014. “The daily flight movements stand at an average of 208 out of the total 235 slots. Airlines have not curtailed domestic operations at the Pune facility, and it will continue hopefully,” he told TOI.
While airlines like Air India, IndiGo, and Air India Express have reduced 250 domestic flights per day from June to August due to rising aviation fuel prices, Pune has maintained its schedule. Dhoke attributed this to soaring passenger traffic, which has kept demand robust.
Passenger Traffic and Facilities
Passenger traffic has increased from approximately 4.5 million in 2014 to over 11.3 million in 2026. Annual aircraft movements have grown from around 35,000 to nearly 69,000. Several passenger-friendly facilities have been introduced to enhance travel experience.
Bird Hit Preparations
Last year, bird hits and unusual bird activity affected flights during monsoon. Dhoke assured that preparations are foolproof this year. “The IAF controls the airside and has completed tasks like cutting tall grass, installing bird cages and zone guns. We are in touch with the PMC for proper garbage management and ensuring stray dogs stay away,” he said.
New Regulations and Developments
The 15-minute waiting cap for private vehicles in the arrival area will soon be implemented, with a fine of Rs500 for violations. The runway recarpeting of the defence airport, ordered by the ministry of defence, will not affect commercial flights. “It will happen during NOTAM periods on weekdays and weekends, so commercial flights remain unaffected. The new departure area will open after security equipment arrives and BCAS approves it. The two buildings will be properly integrated,” Dhoke added.
