Pune LPG Crisis: Distributors Halt New Connections Amid Supply Shortage

Oil marketing companies (OMCs) have implemented an informal freeze on issuing new LPG connections and second cylinders to existing consumers across Pune, creating significant challenges for hundreds of applicants during the ongoing supply crisis. A city-based distributor confirmed this development, revealing that both services have been placed on indefinite hold without any official written communication from the companies.

Verbal Instructions Create Confusion

The distributor explained that the instructions have been conveyed only verbally to agencies, with no formal documentation provided. "Since the crisis started, OMCs have stopped new connections and are also not issuing second cylinders. Both these are on hold," the distributor stated. "There is nothing in writing. We have been instructed verbally not to issue any new connection or second cylinder."

This lack of official communication has created operational confusion and uncertainty among both distributors and consumers. The distributor emphasized that while the online application system continues to accept submissions, agencies are unable to process them due to the informal halt. "The system is accepting applications, but we have been told not to issue connections," he clarified.

Growing Backlog of Applications

The freeze has resulted in a rapidly expanding backlog of applications across Pune. The distributor revealed that his agency alone maintains a waiting list of approximately 600 customers, comprising both online and offline applications. "I have a confirmed, online-registered waiting list of about 290. Offline, I have around 300-400 applications. In total, the waiting list at my agency is close to 600," he detailed.

Another LPG distributor in the city confirmed that new domestic connections have effectively been suspended across multiple agencies for approximately 15-20 days. "New LPG connections have been stopped across the city. People come to us every day, but we are not able to issue them," he explained, requesting anonymity. He highlighted the practical challenges, asking, "If the system does not generate the required documents, how can we issue a connection?"

Consumer Frustration Mounts

The situation has generated considerable confusion and frustration among Pune residents seeking new connections or additional cylinders. Kharadi resident Ananya Ahuja shared her experience, stating, "Two agencies I approached said that OMCs are not issuing new connections. I recently shifted to Pune and my family needs a cylinder urgently. There's no clarity about when this situation will resolve, as per the agencies."

Ajinkya Pujari, a Keshavnagar resident, expressed similar concerns, saying, "I need a new gas connection, but all agencies I visited said they are not processing any new applications right now. This has become a major issue for us at our new home, which doesn't have a piped gas connection."

Social Media Outcry and Wider Impact

Several consumers have turned to social media platforms to voice their concerns and seek clarification. One user from Punawale posted on X that multiple distributors in their area had confirmed the temporary suspension of new connections, requesting official confirmation about the directive and potential resolution timeline.

In another social media post, a resident from Phursungi tagged officials of oil companies, noting that new domestic LPG connections were not being processed in their area and requesting intervention to assist a colleague in securing a connection.

The impact of this crisis extends beyond Pune's borders. Noida-based Pushkar Pushp reported similar difficulties in securing a new connection after relocating. "I went there three or four times in the last ten days, and they told me they are not issuing new connections," he stated. Multiple agencies conveyed the same message, with one suggesting he return after April 20 for updates.

Pushp, who recently moved from Ghaziabad to Greater Noida with his family, emphasized the essential nature of this service, saying, "I have shifted with my family, so a gas connection is essential." The delay has left his household without basic cooking fuel, highlighting the broader implications of the supply crisis affecting multiple regions.
