Pune Experiences Dramatic 120% Increase in PNG Connections
Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad are witnessing an unprecedented surge in demand for piped natural gas (PNG) supplied by Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL), with daily connection installations more than doubling amid a severe LPG cylinder shortage. Officials confirm that what was once an average of 180-190 connections per day has now skyrocketed to approximately 400 connections daily, representing a remarkable 120% growth in consumer adoption.
Capacity Expansion and Consumer Outreach Efforts
MNGL currently possesses the infrastructure to supply piped gas to over 8 lakh domestic consumers across the twin cities, with company representatives acknowledging they are continuously enhancing both capacity and resources to meet escalating demand. "The number of PNG connections has definitely increased over the last few days," a senior MNGL official stated. "We need to check figures regarding our full capacity, but we are increasing it as well as our resources each day."
Despite existing PNG supply provisions in numerous housing societies and townships, many residents have traditionally continued using LPG cylinders. MNGL has launched aggressive promotional campaigns to encourage switching, including sending promotional text messages to potential customers. "We are convincing them through different promotional activities to switch," the official emphasized.
Incentive Programs and Application Process
To further stimulate adoption, MNGL has introduced several attractive schemes:
- Rebate on the first bill for new connections
- Zero application charges for fresh domestic connections
- Special schemes for commercial PNG connections
Prospective customers can access these offers through the MNGL mobile application or by visiting the official website at mngl.in, making the transition process more accessible than ever before.
Consumer Perspectives and Government Directives
Parul Ravi Ghatge, a resident of a housing society on Salunke Vihar Road, expressed her intention to switch to PNG despite initial hesitation. "I had not opted for it till now, but will go ahead and get one soon," the homemaker stated. "It will definitely save us from hassles. I will enquire about how the bill is generated each month on an average."
This surge coincides with a recent central government circular mandating that citizens using piped gas must surrender their LPG connections, a directive that has caught many consumers off guard. Critics argue the timing is particularly challenging given the current energy crisis and LPG shortage affecting households across the region.
MNGL officials confirm they are currently compiling and submitting comprehensive data on PNG connections in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad to relevant oil companies, highlighting the systematic approach to managing this significant shift in domestic energy consumption patterns. The company's ability to handle this increased demand while maintaining service quality will be crucial in the coming weeks as more households seek reliable alternatives to traditional LPG cylinders.
