Punjab Seeks Investors for Renewable Energy to Meet 20% of India's Demand

Punjab Government Issues Call to Investors for Renewable Energy Expansion

The Punjab government made a significant appeal to investors on Saturday, urging them to explore the state's vast renewable energy potential. Officials emphasized that Punjab offers enormous growth opportunities in this sector, with the capacity to cater to 20% of the country's total energy demand.

Progressive Punjab Investors' Summit Focuses on Renewable Energy

A dedicated session on 'Renewable Energy' at the Progressive Punjab Investors' Summit facilitated in-depth deliberations on new and renewable energy sources. Power Secretary Basant Garg addressed the gathering, revealing that the state government has initiated the tender process to install 3000 MW of solar energy projects. He outlined the government's proactive measures to support this initiative.

Government Support and Infrastructure Development

Garg explained that the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited is actively considering serving as a bridge between farmers and investors. To facilitate investment, the government is providing land and ensuring grid connectivity. Additionally, he mentioned that work has begun in the field of battery energy storage, highlighting the state's commitment to a comprehensive renewable energy strategy.

Bio-Energy Potential from Paddy Stubble

Ashish Kumar, General Manager of Verbio, highlighted a critical opportunity in Punjab's agricultural sector. He noted that the state produces approximately 20 million tonnes of paddy stubble annually, which has the potential to meet 20% of India's energy demand. Kumar emphasized the economic and environmental benefits of utilizing this resource.

"Farmers need to understand that by burning stubble, they are not just setting fire to crop residue but burning their own money," Kumar stated. He pointed to the recent geopolitical situation, including attacks on Iran by the US and Israel, which caused an LPG gas shortage and led to a sharp increase in demand for compressed biogas supply. This underscores the urgent need to develop bio-gas grid connectivity.

Industry Leaders Advocate for Ecosystem Development

Bashir Ahmad Shiraz from Reliance Industries echoed the call for investment, stating that if farmers recognize the potential of bio-energy, their lands could transform into gold mines. He stressed the importance of building not only infrastructure but also a supportive ecosystem for new and renewable energy sources.

Key Initiatives and Future Outlook

  • Installation of 3000 MW solar energy projects through a tender process.
  • Government provision of land and grid connectivity to facilitate investors.
  • Development of battery energy storage systems to enhance renewable energy reliability.
  • Utilization of 20 million tonnes of annual paddy stubble for bio-energy production.
  • Creation of a supportive ecosystem to foster growth in renewable energy sectors.

The summit concluded with a strong message from the Punjab government: the state is poised to become a leader in renewable energy, offering lucrative opportunities for investors while addressing national energy demands and promoting sustainable practices.
