Rajkot Railway Division Unveils Rs 35.41 Crore Wagon Shed to Boost Freight Capacity
Rajkot Railway's New Wagon Shed to Triple Repair Capacity

Rajkot Railway Division Inaugurates Advanced Wagon Maintenance Facility

In a significant boost to freight operations, Western Railway's Rajkot division has officially commissioned a cutting-edge combined wagon shed at its Hapa yard near Jamnagar. Constructed at an investment of Rs 35.41 crore, this modern infrastructure project was completed in a remarkable 18 months by the Gati Shakti Unit, Rajkot.

State-of-the-Art Features for Enhanced Efficiency

The newly inaugurated facility represents a technological leap in railway maintenance infrastructure. It is equipped with several advanced features designed to streamline operations:

  • Self-supported lightweight roofing that provides structural integrity while reducing construction time
  • Inspection gantries along two lines that allow simultaneous examination of multiple wagons
  • Hardonite flooring that ensures durability and safety for maintenance personnel

These innovations collectively enable faster, safer, and more efficient inspection, repair, and maintenance of freight wagons, addressing long-standing bottlenecks in railway logistics.

Dramatic Increase in Repair Capacity

According to official statements from the Rajkot division, the new facility will transform maintenance capabilities in the region. The daily wagon repair capacity is projected to surge from just 12 wagons to an impressive 56 wagons per day.

Furthermore, the routine overhauling (ROH) output is expected to increase substantially from approximately 70 wagons to more than 125 wagons per month. This represents nearly an 80% improvement in monthly maintenance throughput.

Significant Reduction in Repair Time

One of the most impactful benefits of the new facility is the dramatic reduction in repair timelines. Previously, wagons classified as "sick" or requiring extensive repairs took around 10 days to become operational again.

With the advanced equipment and optimized workflow at the new shed, this repair time has been slashed to approximately three days. This 70% reduction in turnaround time represents a major breakthrough in railway maintenance efficiency.

Strategic Impact on Freight Operations

Rajkot divisional railway manager Giriraj Kumar Meena emphasized the broader implications of this development. "This state-of-the-art facility will substantially improve the speed and efficiency of wagon repairs," he stated.

"The quicker availability of wagons for freight operations will help reduce yard congestion, improve overall train operations, and significantly increase the Railways' freight-carrying capacity. This development will directly benefit industries and traders who depend on efficient rail transport for their goods."

The strategic location of the Hapa yard near Jamnagar positions this facility to serve as a crucial maintenance hub for freight operations in the region. By addressing maintenance bottlenecks, the Railways aim to enhance their competitive position in the logistics sector and support economic growth through improved transportation infrastructure.
