Ranchi Sees PNG Surge as Residents Seek Reliable Cooking Fuel Amid LPG Concerns
Ranchi PNG Demand Soars as Residents Opt for Piped Gas Over LPG

Ranchi Embraces Piped Natural Gas as Reliable Alternative to LPG

In Ranchi, growing apprehensions regarding the consistent supply of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) coupled with a strong desire for uninterrupted cooking fuel has prompted a significant shift among residents. Many are now opting for piped natural gas (PNG) connections under the comprehensive city gas distribution project managed by GAIL (India) Limited, according to official statements.

Extensive Infrastructure Supports Widespread Adoption

The foundation for this transition is robust. To date, an impressive network comprising nearly 550 kilometers of medium density polyethylene (MDPE) pipeline and approximately 70 kilometers of steel pipes has been meticulously installed across Ranchi. This extensive infrastructure is designed to cater to about 78,000 households. Current data reveals that more than 24,000 homes have already secured PNG connections, with close to 18,000 consumers actively utilizing piped gas for their daily cooking needs on a regular basis.

The operational PNG network currently services numerous key localities, including Bariatu, Harmu, Ashok Nagar, MECON Colony, Argora, Pundag, Hatia, Dhurwa, Tupudana, Namkum, and Kanke, along with specific sections of Lalpur. Officials have confirmed that expansion initiatives are persistently underway in the remaining areas, aiming to integrate more neighborhoods into the growing PNG framework.

Surge in Applications and Daily Connection Rates

GAIL authorities have reported a noticeable and substantial increase in new application submissions in recent days. On average, the company is facilitating between 60 to 75 new domestic PNG connections every single day. A remarkable total of nearly 900 connections were successfully issued within just the past fifteen days alone. Furthermore, an additional 100 consumers are registering their interest and submitting security deposits daily, underscoring a steady and upward trajectory in public demand.

"If the piped gas facility is readily available, I am seriously considering making the switch to it for my regular cooking requirements," stated Rohita Kumari, a resident of Dhurwa who recently inquired about the service. Her sentiment echoes a broader community trend towards seeking more dependable energy solutions.

Technical Distribution and Future Expansion Plans

The comprehensive PNG network now spans nearly 650 kilometers across Ranchi and its adjacent areas. Natural gas is transported at high pressure via the extensive Jagdishpur-Haldia-Bokaro-Dhamra pipeline, entering Ranchi through a critical city gate station (CGS) located at Sarwal. From this central point, the gas is efficiently distributed through the intricate pipeline system to end-users. Regulatory measures ensure that gas is delivered to households at a safe pressure of about 20 millibar.

Prashant Singh, Deputy General Manager of GAIL (India) Ltd, highlighted the driving factors behind PNG's rising popularity. "PNG is gaining substantial traction primarily due to its inherent convenience and proven reliability as a continuous cooking fuel source," Singh explained.

Looking ahead, the company has ambitious expansion goals. Singh added that plans are in place to lay an additional 150 kilometers of pipeline during the 2026-27 period. Moreover, GAIL aims to connect around 20,000 more households to the PNG network by the conclusion of this calendar year. Complementing this, Ranchi currently hosts 27 compressed natural gas (CNG) stations, with another 10 stations planned as part of the ongoing expansion strategy.

Commercial Interest and Connection Procedures

The demand surge is not limited to residential consumers. Over the last two weeks, 6 new commercial PNG connections were provided to establishments such as hotels and restaurants, while 12 additional businesses have formally applied for connections. For domestic users, the security deposit for a PNG connection varies, ranging from Rs 500 to Rs 4,500, depending on the specific plan selected by the consumer.

Officials have clarified that residents living in apartment complexes where the necessary pipelines are already installed can obtain new connections by simply completing the mandatory registration process and submitting the required security deposit. Consumers can apply for new PNG connections or register any complaints through the dedicated toll-free helpline: 1800123121111.
