Secunderabad Railway Station's Major Overhaul Progresses Towards December Deadline

In a significant update from Hyderabad, South Central Railway (SCR) officials have announced that the comprehensive redevelopment of Secunderabad railway station is firmly on schedule, with completion targeted for December this year. The ambitious Rs 700 crore project, which aims to transform one of India's largest transport hubs into a world-class facility, has already seen 60% of the work accomplished, marking a major milestone in this infrastructural upgrade.

Airport-Like Amenities and Enhanced Connectivity

The revamped station is designed to offer an airport-like experience, featuring modern amenities that prioritize passenger comfort and convenience. A senior SCR official emphasized, "The entire project, undertaken at a cost exceeding Rs 700 crore, is expected to be finalized by December, positioning Secunderabad station as one of the country's most advanced railway hubs." To boost multimodal integration, dedicated skywalks will directly link the station to Secunderabad East and West Metro stations, enabling seamless transfers without the need to navigate busy roads. This connectivity enhancement is hailed as a game-changer for daily commuters.

Two-Level Air Concourse to Streamline Passenger Flow

A key highlight of the redevelopment is the introduction of a two-level air concourse, strategically built to manage boarding and deboarding for the station's daily footfall of nearly 1.5 lakh passengers across 180 trains. This concourse will connect both terminal sides, with the first level serving as a spacious waiting area and the second level housing retail outlets, food courts, and leisure spaces. By acting as a central circulation zone, it will significantly reduce platform congestion. Separate entry and exit points, along with travellators, will further ease movement, addressing current crowding issues.

Modern Infrastructure and Sustainability Initiatives

The station's new iconic building will feature G+3 floors on both sides, complemented by a multi-level parking facility accommodating over 1,000 cars and 5,000 two-wheelers. In a shift from the previous open design, the entire station, including platforms and tracks, will be covered with a roof for better protection and comfort. SCR is also prioritizing green infrastructure, incorporating sustainability measures such as a 5,000 kWp solar power plant, EV charging points for approximately 100 vehicles, a 500 KL sewage treatment plant, and rainwater harvesting systems.

Broader Redevelopment Efforts in Hyderabad

Concurrently, redevelopment work at Hyderabad (Nampally) railway station is advancing rapidly, with an estimated cost of Rs 327 crore. This project focuses on multi-modal integration, including a foot over bridge (FOB) with travellators linking to the nearby Nampally Metro station. Upgrades will feature a modern air concourse, advanced security systems with comprehensive CCTV surveillance, and controlled access points to enhance passenger safety. Hyderabad is part of the Amrit Stations initiative, with 40 stations in the Telangana region identified for redevelopment, all guided by a master plan to integrate station complexes with city infrastructure and passenger amenities.
