SMEs in Kolhan Division Voice Apprehension Over LPG Supply Despite Government Allocation Increase
The Union government has announced a significant hike in the allocation of commercial LPG, raising it from the existing 50% to 70%. However, entrepreneurs operating small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the Kolhan division of Jharkhand remain deeply apprehensive about the regular allocation of refills, citing persistent ground-level scarcity.
Industry Leaders Highlight Persistent Supply Challenges
Manav Kedia, president of the Singhbhum Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed skepticism regarding the practical impact of the allocation increase. "The government earlier raised the allocation from 20% to 50%, but on the ground, the scarcity persisted for a wide spectrum of small and medium industries. Regardless of the hike in the allocation, what we are getting in reality is a matter of serious concern for us," Kedia stated. He further noted that a war-induced gas crisis has exacerbated woes for the industry in availing commercial gas, and the sector is now seeking assistance from stakeholders, including the state government, to facilitate an uninterrupted supply of gas refills.
Adityapur Industrial Area's Heavy Reliance on Commercial LPG
The Adityapur industrial area, spanning over 3,200 hectares with more than 1,200 functional units, relies heavily on commercial LPG for essential engineering processing. Entrepreneurs in this region have underscored the critical nature of this dependency. Samir Singh, secretary of the Industrial Stability and Reforms Organization (ISRO), which represents automobile ancillary units in the Adityapur industrial area, reported that small units continue to experience significant problems in arranging LPG cylinders.
"A handful of the large industries operating in Jamshedpur, Adityapur, and Chaibasa receive supply directly from LPG companies, and they will benefit from the increase in allocation. However, most of the ancillaries that source LPG refills from local distributors are experiencing severe woes as commercial LPG supply to these distributing agencies remains irregular," Singh explained.
Impact on Automobile Ancillaries and Pending Work
Industry insiders have revealed that several automobile ancillaries are currently waiting for an uninterrupted supply of LPG refills to complete pending metal work. This delay not only hampers production schedules but also affects the broader supply chain within the automotive sector. The irregular supply chain poses a significant threat to operational stability and economic output in the region.
Government Assurance and Proposed Dialogue
In response to these concerns, Prem Ranjan, regional director of the Jharkhand Industrial Area Development Authority, has assured cooperation with the entrepreneurs. "If ancillary operators are not getting LPG refills regularly, we will hold a dialogue with them and engage with gas supply companies to address these woes," Ranjan affirmed. This commitment highlights a recognition of the issue at the administrative level, though tangible solutions are yet to be implemented.
The situation underscores a critical gap between policy announcements and on-ground execution, leaving SMEs in a precarious position despite governmental efforts to bolster resource allocation.
