Somany Ceramics Amplifies Sustainability Drive with Waste Tile Reuse on Global Recycling Day 2026

On Global Recycling Day 2026, Somany Ceramics is advancing its innovative waste tile reuse initiative, transforming manufacturing byproducts into creative design solutions through strategic academic partnerships. This sustainability-focused campaign, launched over the past year, has evolved into a collaborative effort with architecture and design institutions across India, demonstrating how discarded tiles can be reimagined through artistic and functional interventions.

Addressing Manufacturing Waste with Creative Solutions

The initiative originated from a practical challenge: broken and unused tiles accumulating at manufacturing units and retail points. Instead of treating this as residual waste, Somany Ceramics redirected the material into an experimental design exercise by partnering with nearby architecture and design institutes. This enabled the utilization and recycling of tile waste available at local dealer and stock points, fostering a hands-on approach to sustainability.

Widespread Academic Engagement and Impact

Over 3,000 students from 40 institutes participated in the campaign, spanning regions across North, South, East, and West India. Key institutions included Manipal University in Rajasthan, Amity University in Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, KIIT School of Architecture and Planning in Odisha, Sushant University in Haryana, Indian Institute of Art and Design in Delhi, and the Institute of Indian Interior Designers in Hyderabad. The engagement was structured as a tactile experience, allowing students to interact directly with discarded materials and reimagine their potential beyond conventional uses.

Students created diverse outputs such as murals, installations, and functional design interventions that became integral to campus environments. Many of these works remain in place, subtly reinforcing a culture of reuse and embedding sustainability into everyday interactions.

Quantifiable Environmental Benefits

The initiative repurposed more than 8,100 square feet of waste tile, diverting 12 tons of tiles from landfills and achieving an estimated reduction of 4.8 tons of CO₂ emissions. This significantly lowered the overall carbon footprint. Notably, the tiles were not industrially reprocessed or downcycled; instead, they were used in their unaltered state, emphasizing principles of resource circularity, low embodied carbon design, and material-led innovation. This approach encouraged students to design with imperfections and constraints, turning limitations into drivers of creativity and environmental impact reduction.

Educational Catalyst and Industry Insights

Workshops at each institution brought together faculty and the Somany team, blending technical expertise with creative exploration. This provided students with a rare opportunity to engage with materials in a tactile, real-world context, bridging academic learning with practical execution. The initiative effectively translated sustainability from an abstract concept into a tangible, immediate, and transformative lived experience.

Mr. Anshuman Chakravarty, Vice President & Head – Marketing & Communication at Somany Ceramics Ltd., commented: "Waste in our industry has traditionally been seen as an operational byproduct. We see it differently—as an untapped resource. Our waste tile initiative reflects a conscious shift from linear consumption to circular thinking, where what we discard today can become the resource of tomorrow. By reimagining how materials are valued, reused, and reintegrated, we are not only reducing environmental impact but also setting a new benchmark for responsible manufacturing. Our effort is also to sensitize the next generation, encouraging them to engage with sustainability not as an abstract idea, but as a lived practice and to empower them to become ambassadors of a more responsible, circular future."

Broader Implications for Global Recycling Day

As Global Recycling Day highlights sustainable practices across industries, this effort serves as a reminder that meaningful change often begins with small, deliberate steps. In this case, it involved recognizing the value in existing materials and extending their life through design, collaboration, and intent. Somany Ceramics' initiative underscores the potential for corporate-academic partnerships to drive environmental stewardship and innovation.
