Surat Makes History with Unprecedented Diamond Display
In a landmark event for the global diamond industry, the city of Surat has achieved a historic milestone by putting on display more than one million carats of rough diamonds for the very first time. This significant development underscores Surat's pivotal role as the world's primary diamond processing hub, where the majority of the planet's diamonds are cut and polished.
Auction Houses Converge on Surat's Diamond Bourse
The display and auction sessions, organized by multiple auction houses, have been actively running since March. The latest and most prominent showcase is being held at the Surat International Diatrade Center, located within the prestigious Surat Diamond Bourse, from April 6 to May 10. This event is a key component of the India Rough Diamond Show (IRDS), which is orchestrated by the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council.
Industry experts estimate that the rough diamonds showcased during this event are valued at nearly $100 million, highlighting the substantial economic impact of the show. Traditionally, such high-stakes rough diamond auctions have been confined to established global trading centers like Dubai and Antwerp, or within diamond-producing nations themselves. The strategic decision to host these auctions directly in Surat is a clear indicator of the city's rapidly growing influence and clout in the international diamond trade.
Transforming Access and Efficiency for Diamond Manufacturers
Dinesh Navadiya, chairman of the Indian Diamond Institute, emphasized the transformative nature of this shift. "Previously, a large number of cutting and polishing firms were compelled to travel abroad to participate in auctions. We have held some auction displays at the Navratna Gallery in the past, and such events significantly accelerate the process for both buyers and sellers," he explained.
The momentum for local auctions has been building steadily. In March, Star Gems organized an auction at the Surat Diamond Bourse that attracted approximately 240 diamond manufacturers for viewing. Remarkably, within just two weeks, the company conducted another display, which saw registrations from over 250 firms, demonstrating robust and growing interest.
Adding to the event's prestige, two other prominent auction firms—Koin International and a Dubai-based company—are also actively participating in the show. Organizers are optimistic, expecting the India Rough Diamond Show to draw participation from more than 1,000 Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) units throughout the duration of the event.
Consolidating Surat's Global Diamond Leadership
Jayanti Savaliya, regional chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, highlighted the strategic importance of hosting IRDS in Surat. "Hosting the India Rough Diamond Show strengthens Surat's position as the heart of India's diamond manufacturing ecosystem. With direct access to global rough supply now available locally, diamantaires stand to benefit from improved efficiencies, reduced turnaround time, and better business continuity. This initiative will further consolidate Surat's role in the global diamond industry," he stated.
This historic event not only showcases Surat's logistical and operational capabilities but also signals a potential permanent shift in how rough diamonds are traded globally, bringing the auction floor closer to the world's largest processing center and empowering local businesses like never before.
